Coligny Theatre - a Local Institution on Hilton Head Island, SC
It may seem strange to feature a theater when I speak about local attractions, but little Coligny Theatre is really an exception. It's located at 1 Forest Beach Drive, Suite 1-5 on Hilton Head Island within the Coligny Plaza shopping center. The south end of the island is really the enter of what Hilton Head was and what the Town envisions for the future.
Opening in 1972, the theater was originally called The Island Theater and was the only movie theater on Hilton Head Island. With the advent of VCRs, cable, and the demands by movie studios for theaters to upgrade equipment, the owners tried to keep the little theater open, but as the theater and its equipment deteriorated, after 25 years, in 1997, the Island Theater closed its doors.
Thankfully, that is not the end of the story; in 2001, the owners of Coligny Plaza decided that there needed to be a movie theater again, and they decided to operate the space themself and renamed it Coligny Theatre. With its beautiful proscenium, velvet curtains, wondeful deep stage, and cute foyer, the Coligny Theatre gained a new life. Run as an 'art house,' the Coligny Theatre shows films from independent film makers, Sundance Film Festival offerings, Savannah Film Festival movies, and even some foreign language films from Oscar winning directors! You can also see most of the first run movies and can book the theater for private events - they provide the movie, drinks, and popcorn!
Among the other uses of Coligny Theatre is their partnership with the Heritage Library to present various Speaker Series which provides a cozy venue for local authors, artists, directors, and even congresspeople to present information and insight to the community.
The life of the Coligny Theatre is full and it provides a wonderful reminder of the charm that is Hilton Head Island.
