What color speaks of your Character? How will it affect a Buyer’s Mood?

Homeowners often use bold colors on their walls and when selling homes they don’t consider how it will impact a buyer's mood.

Color is Universal and can say much about a person and their lifestyle, most of us use color to stimulate our mood and tell a story about our character. Buyer’s generally look past neutral colors but when it comes to bright bold colors some can’t envision themselves living there.

I love to use color in our home and I have painted most of our walls, but I have to say I don’t really like wall colors on my Sellers homes  unless they have taste and use neutral colors(really depends on style of home and location).

If you like using color to create an emotionally healthy home, color consultants say you should first consider the primary function of each room.

Beige's, taupe's and grays might seem safe, but these "neutrals" can be a color minefield. You'll want to pay close attention to the undertones of your floors, furniture and any large elements in the room, and try to stay consistent with your new wall color.

Using warm tones in your living room and foyer like earth tones brown and beige work well together in living and Foyer also using orange and yellow tones or Deep Purple helps stimulate conversation. Kitchen colors to use would be reds and yellows to also stimulate conversation and if you had color when younger use it to bring back memories and conversation.

It’s impossible to judge a color on its own, so using swatches or even buying small containers of paint and doing a color test. If using swatches hold them vertically against the wall everywhere. It’s a good rule of thumb to visit your test swatches or wall test during different times during the day because of different points of light.

Sample Colors and their moods:

White, Gray and Black

White evokes air, light, purity, truth, sterility, simplicity and youth. Gray evokes elegance, formality, neutrality, respect, stability, subtlety, wisdom, urban sprawl and balance. Black evokes sorrow, rebellion and sophistication.

Earth Tones

Brown and beige shades promote feelings of calm, nature, richness, and dependability.

Warm Tones

Red, oranges and yellow are warm or hot colors. They evoke intensity, passion, boldness, energy, happiness, enthusiasm, desire and optimism.

Cool Tones

Cool tones, like blue and green, evoke nature, wealth, initiative, youth, confidence, security, harmony, unity, loyalty and strength.

Magenta, Purple, Indigo and Violet

These colors conjure magic, wisdom, pride, romanticism, spirituality, creativity and luxury.

Hi Bob --- how we personally live with color can be much different than how we might want to have our home be presented and marketed.  This post is a good guide.

I always prefer neutral colors in the homes I sell.  For me at home, I like the cool colors but use lots of neutral also.  A little color can go a long way.

Bob - Color styles change over time, and depend on what part of the country you live in. It's always easier to stick with neutral, and what is most common for your area when looking to sell.

Bob what an excellent point, long are the days in my market when we use to insist to the sellers to paint their homes white and keep it white on the inside. Loved your post about what colors create what emotions  in a buyer. Funny at home Diane and I were split on what colors to do for ourselves and if I show her your post she will agree about the validity of the analysis, because these moods exist in our personalities.... the colors mirror our personalities....Endre

I remember my mother dressing me up in browns and grays when I was a kid.  Now as an adult, Red is my favorite, and I also like some of the blues, and Teals. I don't feel bland anymore!

Hi Rob

This is a terrific resource that gets you thinking about the possibilities of different colors. Being extreme is risky, even if you personally enjoy it, since it can be a turnoff for buyers. Even though paint is cheap and an easy fix, many buyers don't want to have to deal with.
