The Dollar Store Secret

If you are like me and you are on a tight inventory budget, but need nice things for staging, consider the Dollar Store.  I have found many things that I can mix with my nicer items and noone would know any different.  Next time you need a few accessories, don't be afraid to look at the cheap places.

I have found things like:

  • solid colored plates
  • silverware
  • cloth napkins
  • coffee cups
  • glass pitchers ( for lemonade)
  • glass jars
  • soaps (I put the soaps in the glass jars for a Pottery Barn look)
  • frames
  • grasses
  • greenery that doesn't look bad
  • pottery ( I put several grasses in the pottery and it looks like I got it from Target or HomeGoods)
  • plate stands
  • finger towels ( some of them actually look really nice) I like brown, white and blue
  • candles (I like white)
  • And many staging toolkit items like rubberbands, tape, wire...

Next time stop in and see what you can make look like a million bucks when it was only one buck!

Letitia -  I purchased all of my plate stands from a dollar store.  I found a huge cache of black wrought iron stands and bought about 15 of them.  Usually you would pay that much for one.  I confess that was a fluke and I have not purchased anything for staging there since.  Maybe I should give it another try.

You can also find stuff to put in bathroom baskets like sea sponges or puffs.  Thanks for sharing!

I love the dollar store, but it is hit or miss sometimes.  Once I found really good looking fake apples and lemons... a whole bag for a buck, can't beat that! I also get a lot of my note cards there.

Wow - that is a fantastic list. I never go into the dollar store but pass them ALL the time.  I will start checking them out.  I do need some more faux fruit and the soap is a definite addition to my list.

I've also found seasonal stuff for promotional items (e.g. candy bags, ribbons, etc.).

I never thought about a Dollar Store - of course my training only talked about specialty designer showrooms and netowrking to get discounts there - but I bet even with a discount it wouldnt be as cost effective as the good old Dollar Store!

I was almost on the same page earlier - wondering if it was faux pas to shop at walmart for staging items! ;)

I love the dollar stores and have a similar list as yours.

And you're right, Ann.  It's a great place for all the seasonal stuff.  Speaking of which, Hobby Lobby has their valentine decor on sale for 80% off.  I purchased a bouquet of red roses on twines tied with a ribbon for dirt cheap.

Great idea.  They have quite a bit of little things that help.  You just have to look a little harder.

I've purchased the bags of smooth river rocks to use in glass vases or plates with pillar candles.  They're only a dollar, where at Pier 1 - $6.00-8.00!

I've only been in a dollar store a couple of times.  I never would of thought to shop there for inventory items. Thanks so much for these suggestions!
