Charlotte... The Day After The Big Storm

Charlotte Snow Storm 23 January 2016Charlotte... The Day After The Big Storm... We all hunkered down yesterday during the ice and snow storm in Charlotte... with the biggest concern that we might lose power. The good news is that at my end of south Charlotte, no power was lost and we were home, safe and warm, all day. Unfortunately, other parts of the city and state were not as fortunate.

Always stunning how "quiet" it gets in the city when it snows... you feel like there's no one else in the world, but you. We didn't get a lot of snow, but plenty of freezing rain and ice, which is more dangerous and certainly a whole lot harder to "shovel."

Charlotte Snow Storm 23 January 2016My front porch has a very slippery covering of ice and snow, as do my front steps. I think I'll wait for the sun to melt some of this down before venturing out of my home through the front entrance. Walking outside right now is at least as dangerous as driving.

And no one is going much of anywhere today, either, or should do so. Secondary roads are not cleared and the snow is covering a lot of dangerous ice. It's certainly pretty and pristine on my street this morning. I heard the sun might come out a bit (though skies are pretty grey right now) to help with some meltdown, but really not expecting much meltdown before Sunday.

Carolina Panthers are still scheduled to play in the NFC Championship game tomorrow at Bank of America Stadium (#KeepPounding) in somewhat warmer weather. But out-of-town fans will have a hard time getting into Charlotte, although the airport is planning to resume flights around mid-day today.

10 GREAT WAYS TO AVOID "CABIN FEVER" DURING A SNOW STORM:

  1. Catch up on your reading. What could be nicer than curling up next to a fire with a great book?

  2. Make popcorn and watch a move or catch up on favorite TV shows.

  3. Start and finish up a home improvement project.

  4. Play cards, Scrabble (or any other board game your family loves), work a puzzle.

  5. Do some fun baking--try out a few new recipes.

  6. Nothing wrong with taking a nice, long nap!

  7. Organize family photos and keepsakes.

  8. Get your tax return paperwork organized for April.

  9. Clean out/organize a closet or two.

  10. If the weather allows it, go outside and build a snowman in your front yard.

Lou Ludwig ~ good morning, Lou. In south Charlotte it's basically melted down as of Sunday afternoon... what's left should be gone today as temperatures are forecast to be in the 50's. But there are parts of North Carolina that are still "suffering" from the after effects of this storm.

Gabe Sanders ~ hi Gabe... two days stuck at home, but now all is well. It's only the niggling concern that one could lose power at any moment and fortunately that didn't happen.

Grant Schneider ~ you won't see too many snow blowers around Charlotte, Grant. We just wait for the meltdown. So sometimes we get stuck in our houses an extra day or two.

Roy Kelley ~ hi Roy... you folks up in the DC/MD/VA area got hit very badly. Big chunks of NC did as well. Charlotte was more fortunate, but it's still a big deal for us because we can go for years without any snow event.

Putting the time to good use is definitely a good way to keep your mind off of the weather.  The feeling of being trapped in your home and unable to leave can be anxiety inducing.

Chris Ann Cleland ~ hi Chris Ann... for some reason, I'm ok being housebound for a few days. And fortunately, I don't have any little kids to keep occupied. But I know there are people who go stir crazy after just one day.

Nina Hollander I hope all is getting back to normal and you got to do some of the things you posted.  Sitting down with a good book sounds great to me.  It's been a long time since I've done that.  Maybe I need a snowstorm.

Elyse Berman, Boca Raton, FL ~ hi Elyse... I managed to do two things I rarely have time to do this past weekend... spend a few hours finishing up a book and take two naps! Those snow storms are surely good for something!

Despite all the snow it seems many areas were fortunate to have not lost power or have other issues. NJ sure caught it, though - the flooding there was horrendous.

Naps are a good thing!

Jeff Dowler CRS ~ hi Jeff... Charlotte is sufficiently south where we had some ice and snow, but it quickly melted after two days. But parts of North Carolina were very badly hit, especially in the mountains and closer to Virginia.
