I Don't Care About Your Brokerage Or Your Alphabet

This is a great blog by Liz and Bill Spear .

One of the great benefits of being part of the ActiveRain community is the ability to 'get to know' folks from all across the country.  I have a long list of agents who I would happily refer my clients to when the time comes.

I Don't Care About Your Brokerage Or Your Alphabet

....when looking for an agent to send a referral.

I know in a perfect world my corporate HQ would love for me to say I ONLY refer to other RE/MAX agents.

And the folks in the CRS group would love it if I ONLY refer to other CRS designates.

And to make both groups happy I'd have to whittle down the agents to RE/MAX agents with CRS designations.  And while there are probably plenty of agents across the country that fit that double requirement, there just might not be any agent in the area I need that fits both.

So now which of the two criteria is the most important?

My brokerage?

My designation?

OR

Neither is important to me.

The answer is, neither is my critical decision maker for selecting an agent that I trust to take care of friends, family, clients, etc.

Sure, once upon a time my default would have been to go straight to the RE/MAX online directory and look for an agent.

But then this strange thing happened after joining AR.  I met lots and lots of agents that were just outstanding.  And they literally work for 100s of different brokerages.

Some have designations, some don't.

I've yet to find any brokerage or designation that has a monopoly on great agents.

Great agents work for brokerages large and small.

Some are REALTORS (R), some aren't.

Some have a long list of alphabet designations after their name, some have none.

But the thing about getting to know agents in the Rain is I learn not just what they know, but how they ACT.  And it's the how they act that means as much as anything to me when selecting someone to offer a referral.

It's not just enough to be competent, that's just the bottom line to be considered.   How an agent acts and reacts gives me critical information about whether I want MY reputation tied to them.  And face it, when we refer a buyer or seller to an agent, you can bet what they think about us is a package deal based on how that referred agent treats that buyer or seller.

That's what I like about the Rain.  We get a chance to interact with lots of agents and see who's behind the curtains.  I've got a long list of agents I'd happily send a referral to, and a much, much shorter list of "sorry, but I'm not betting on you to take care of my referral.".

So while brokerage firms and designations might be a tie breaker all other things being equal, they're not at the top of my list for finding the right match to take care of my referral.

And if you need an agent for southwest Ohio, of course we hope you don't let our brokerage or alphabet stand in the way of giving us a call!

Hi Belinda Spillman -  I feel like I could have writiten that blog. Almost the same exact circumstance!  I feel that you can really get to know someone just by reading their blog and their comments.  I want my clients to know they are going to great agents not just another Re/MAX agent.  So I would rather use AR.

Every individual is different whether they work for a certain brokerage or not... do you treat all clients with dignity and respect is the question.

Belinda, Thanks for the reblog!  We have a long list too and feel most comfortable referring to other Rainers.

I look for agents that appear to have the knowledge of the business and their blog indicates some integrity. Trustworthy is a plus, but does not mean they can get the job done.

Hi Belinda, I did miss the post, thanks for the re-blog. We can tell a lot about the person by their AR presence and their posts for sure.

Hi Belinda. I agree and brokerage penetration varies in each market.  It also varies with niche property lake homes, golf course, ect.

Good reblog. I completely agree with you about referring to Active Rain Members I know, I could care less about the fancy initials.
