"Mommy, she's not doing it right! She doesn't know anything," stated my almost 8 year old son about his 6 year old sister, with an air of superiority.
"She is younger than you, and is still working on learning those skills," I replied. "It's okay if you don't do things the same way, as long as the end result is the same."
"She should do it MY way," he replied and stomped off.
This recent interaction between me and my highly opinionated son was brought to the forefront of my memory when I read a blog on AG in the outer blogosphere: a blog war started and ended badly.
Carol Hian, a former (notice the word former) blogger with Redfin in San Diego, wrote a blog yesterday focused on another local San Diego real estate agent, Kris Berg (referred to as Barbie in the blog). Kris had written a somewhat sarcastic blog about Redfin's announcement that they will now be offering buyer tours for a fee to buyers that want more service from their buyer's agents.
Carol, assigned to blog about San Diego for Redfin, took her comments too far, in an action that send Kelman writing an apology on the company blog site.
When you sit down at your computer, are you thinking about WHAT you write in your comments and blogs? If the owner of the company sat and read your blog and your comments would they say "Wow, Melina is a great agent!" OR would they give you the boot like Carol got.
Regardless of how you chose to practice real estate, alternative business models are good for the industry. Whether you like the concepts or not, having new concepts drives us all to be better, more efficient, and to hone our skills. Competition and differences makes our industry "evolve" into something that is better for agents and better for consumers.
We don't have to all do it ONE way. Sometimes as I hear about blog wars, I sit back and wonder didn't your parents ever teach you that we don't have to all be the same? What about our society has made some of us feel like we can't deviate from the "norm" or do things a little differently. Really all we should care about is the end result, which in real estate is happy satisfied customers.
With Rich's recent post about the blog spats that he is dealing with, I would hope that bloggers would remember that we don't all have to do it YOUR way...unless you are a highly opinonated almost 8 year old boy.
BUT...then again...you may not want to spend time in your room in time out.
