Who Cares About the Earth?

Globe I just want my lifestyle…

Actions speak louder than words. I drive an SUV and live in a leaky 1938 brick Tudor. Sometimes I even take a long shower and turn up the heat. I piss myself off when I think about this because I also diligently recycle, carry my canvas shopping bags into the store whenever I think about it, and buy energy efficient light bulbs.

More and more often, clients are asking me about energy efficient homes, options for remodeling and how to get to Whole Foods in Cherry Creek. There seems to be a re-surging interest in natural foods, natural building products and how each of us can begin to make a difference, despite our individual lifestyles. Some of us will do more than others, but each of us can make an incremental difference.

50 Simple Things…

Remember the book 50 Simple Things You Can Do to Save the Earth? It hit the bookstores in 1989 and was all the rage for awhile. I bought it and tried to make a concerted effort to adopt many of the suggestions. You can still find the book at Amazon.com and in some bookstores. These days there are also terrific resources on the internet and through your real estate broker or builder. We’ll need more than 50 simple things, but you gotta start somewhere.

Gretchen - too many people supersize their meals, then top it off with a diet coke. they think the same way about waste. if the homes were more energy efficient, it would be like only offering a salad bar.

Hi Margaret:  Thanks for the first comment.  I was actually just over at the "groups" section perusing groups I can join.  I'll look for the eco group, thanks for the tip.

Peter: I love your analogy.  Americans' like the biggest and best... I do see a bit of a trend away from that as some people are actually downsizing their houses.

Hi Benjamin,  Thanks for the tip, I'll look forward to reading your entry.  I certainly have a lot to learn!

Hi Brad,  I appreciate your advice and the link.  I look forward to reading it.  I've been around here for many months, and was just spending too much time on my other blog, my real estate business, my management duties and my family to get engaged in AR.  I finally decided I had to jump in last night, and I'm glad I did!  I remember many months ago your post about your tough times around the holidays.  I hope that the first quarter 2008 treated you and your family better! (Did you like LifeStyle Denver? - it's become my only hobby...)

Hello Keith,  Thanks for the good wishes.  I like your blog!

Hi Dorene,  I agree that browsing helps.  I've been reading and browsing for about 6 months now.  I know it shouldn't have taken me so long to actually show up... I'll look forward to seeing you around!

Welcome and thanks for your comments.  I too am becoming more and more aware of things I am doing that are not very 'green'.  I recently joined the Eco Broker program, which is an organization based in Evergreen Colorado.  I'd recommend giving the program a look:  www.ecobroker.com.  I wish you continued success!

Stefan, I did join the Colorado group, it's a great idea!  I actually just posted there tonight.  Anyway, our office is undergoing a green campaign and we had a speaker from eco broker and a built-green builder give a presentation to our office.  It was fascinating.  Tell me, why doesn't NAR recognize eco broker?

Hi Gretchen - Below is the response from the NAR regarding why they don't recognize the Eco Broker Certification:

Per its bylaws, NAR does not recognize or endorse any third-party designation programs regardless of their level of quality.

NAR does not officially recognize any designations other than those from within the REALTOR® family. The EcoBroker Certification is not affiliated with or endorsed by NAR - it is offered by EcoBroker International who is not affiliated with NAR at this time and therefore cannot be added into your NAR record.

Thanks Stefan,  I had heard it was because there weren't enough eco-brokers for NAR to make it a group, but that as it grew they might consider it.  Then I most recently heard that they may start their own eco group.
