Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

Who hasn't heard of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde?  I've heard of and probably seen the movie.  I just found a book in my house that is OLD and it is titled Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson.  I'm almost out of new reading material so I decided to read this old classic.  I assume it could be called a classic.  I expected to spend several days and get really involved in the tale because books are always better than movies.  The book is about an inch thick so I knew it might take a while to finish.

On page 65 it said, "The End."  Another story was starting up.  What!  Is this just a short story?  How come this book looked so thick and I'd just begun to love Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde?  I looked at the front of the book again and the title was there just as I gave above.  On the spine it said the same thing.  The book was by Grosset and Dunlap and has no date in it.  Only inside on the title page did it say the real name, "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and The Master of Ballantrae by Robert Louis Stevenson."

Deceptive advertising.....all those many years ago.  The main story was not even 1/4 of the book.  So I learned how the tale was a short story and how they packaged to deceive a long long time ago!  But I enjoyed the short read.  Now I'll search for another.

I have not read this classic. I am fortunate to have read your blog, because now I will be prepared when I do read this classic that it is really a short story.

Lorraine and Loretta, thanks for the comment.  I thought it was an interesting story and expected a longer one.

The History Channel had the most interesting program on Jekyll and Hyde, and although the story is set in London, they made a case for the city of Edinburgh, Scotland, the medical capital of Europe at the time.  Body snatchers dug up fresh corpses and the doctors at the University bought them.

We tend to think that the problems we have today didn't ever exist before our time.  I used to be different---now I am the same!

Mike, that is interesting.  When I was going through art school, we learned how the doctors AND ARTISTS used those stolen (sometimes) corpses for research and in the case of artists, for anatomy study in order to draw better figures.  I need to research Jekyll and Hyde.  Thanks for comments.

Charles, you may be a true Dr. Jekyl Mr. Hyde.  Steven would probably vouch for that....or he may cause you to be so!!
