Lately, I've been all over the place (physically, but mostly mentally).  This started not too long ago when I did something that went completely against my plan.  More importantly, it went against the grain, against who I am and what I want for my life and business.  I knew it almost immediately.  Funny thing was, I actually knew it before I even did it.  Yet, I did it anyway because of some crazy feeling of obligation or guilt.

For a second I was living "out of integrity," but this too seemed to elude me.  I mean, I knew something was off, but I just couldn't put my finger on it.  Then I picked up the book by Michael Port, Book Yourself Solid, to browse through it for the third or fourth time, and I came across this paragraph.

Have you compromised yourself or watered yourself down in any area of your business?  For example, have you been in a business situation where you walked away feeling like you settled for less or compromised your integrity?  You may be thinking, "I don't sell out.  I've never compromised or sold out."  If you haven't, you are unique.  It's completely normal to compromise yourself or be out of integrity from time to time.  We all are.

Instantly, I knew what I had been doing wrong.  I had moved into the passenger seat.  This lack of authority on my part had started dripping over into other areas of my life and business.   I felt completely out of control and simply forgot that I could (and should) be driving.  If I didn't take control, nothing else would matter.

For me, driving means a lot of things:
  1. Keeping a daily journal so that I start regaining my clarity,
  2. Exercising and eating better so that I have more stamina,
  3. Getting more organized so that I don't feel so scattered,
  4. Getting a handle on my time so that I accomplish the most important things, and
  5. Getting a handle on my business so that it moves in the direction I want it to go.

The first few things keep me physically able to drive , and the last one is like my map that keeps me moving in the right direction.

This week, I've been re-routing my trip, since I seem to have gotten off course.  I'm deciding exactly which way I want to go with every aspect of my business.  Fortunately, I have a trusty navigator helping me (Thanks, Betsy!).  Together, we're mapping out the best possible route to my destination.

In doing so, I have to keep one thing in mind, the visual image of what I want from my business and from my life.  I also have to remember who I am and mold my business to fit me and my style and personality, instead of the other way around.  That means, I may have to turn away some business, and I may have to tell someone no, but that's okay.  Another quote that stood out to me from Michael Port's book was this:

"The greatest strategy for personal and business development on the planet is bold self expression."

That means, I'm going to drive in my kind of car, going where I want to go, playing my kind of music on the radio (and loudly, I might add).

I have to stay in the driver’s seat.

Sometimes, I may have to pull over and check the map, but that's okay, too.  In the end, I'll be where I want to be, still driving down the road, and hopefully enjoying some nice scenery.

Amber, have you been inside my head?  This post totally spoke to me.  I'm guilty of having lost focus on the big picture this past month. (I've been having such fun on AR, after all).  Thanks for your inspiring words.  I'm revisiting my plan!

Amber, I was just thing some of the things in your most timely post. Finally decided to get a trainer to help me out for two days per week. My journal is on track, I had 16 calls in 5 hours today and several e-mails, this was the day after Mardi Gras. I wrote each down. Having a partner has allowed me to be more organized as we work with plenty of buyers. Is that a Studebaker in the photo. Did you see my Mardi Gras pictures of child and grandchild. Good post!

A personal trainer?!  I'm jealous!  ;-)  Unfortunately, I have to go solo for now.  Maybe someday I can get there.

It feels great to get things in order and finally going your way, huh?  It sounds like you have it together.

No, I haven't seen your Mardi Gras post.  I'll head over there next.  By the way, when you get that new blog going, be sure to send me the address.

Amber I really like this post. I'm all about staying focused and being in charge of the things I do. For me, it eliminates a lot of stress in my life. Balance is so important. And don't let people steal your time. It's yours so use it wisely.

Thanks, BB.  Isn't it funny that the more you stay focused and in charge of your schedule, the more free time you gain and stress you eliminate?  It seems counter-intuitive, but it's really true.  I used to hate feeling so "confined" to a schedule, but now I realize it's the most liberating thing I've done to regain my time.

I'm trying to get back on Coach John Davidson's game schedule.  I felt so in control when I used it.  Free time was free time, and work time was work time.  You're right, balance is very important.

I'm reading Entrepreneur Magazine right now.  This month, the editor has a bunch of quotes in the Editor's Note.  I thought you all might like this one, since it hits on the same subject as this post.

When I've been unsuccessful, I've been controlled.  When I've been successful, I've been in control.

- Katherine Hepburn

I have found what you have written about to be true!  It is important to be balanced both physically and mentally.  When you fall off the bike -- or go off the path -- just get right back on course.

A well written post filled with important things to remember about staying the course. Most of the time I don't have an issue but there are moments. Right now things are pretty well on course, but more business is needed. Eating well, taking some personal time, and exercising regularly are pretty much habits now...thank goodness. This post is a good impetus to continue focusing and maintaining the balance.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Remaining on track, and doing a personal inventory, should be a requirement of us- yet, it seems to fall by the wayside!  We work in a highly emotional field, and often get entangled in the process, rather than viewing the final outcome- what a sad trip!  How many times have I looked back, and realized that all of that stress was not neccessary- GREAT post, and thank you!

Laurie ~ I've had to make this a part of my system as much as lead generation.  Every other Wednesday, I reserve some time to look back over the previous two weeks and see what worked for me and what didn't.  I agree with you that we should require this of ourselves.  I would have been way off base in six months or a year, if I hadn't "pulled over" for a second.

Yea Amber!  Great post.

A couple of weeks ago I got "that feeling."  Where do I go from here?  Where exactly is here?  I hired a part-time assistant and now it is a joy to walk in my office.  You are right, you have to reexamine what the 'big rocks' are and then take it on down from there.  This is the perfect time in everyone's year for this post.

Virginia, it seems that a lot of us are on the same page lately, and you're right, this might be the perfect time to take a step back for a second.  It's good to hear that you have an assistant and are enjoying work again.  I was talking about that with Betsy just the other day.  It's a great feeling when you can't wait to get out of bed and start each day.

Amber - ooohhh, AWESOME message in this post!  I have found that on those few days when I don't plan out my day and write out my 'to-do' list, I flounder all over the place.  I've experimented just this week a little with just that.  I have not written a list for that day, but used the one from the day before - the things that didn't get crossed off.  I've found that that does NOT work for me.  I must have one specifically for each day of work.  I've been a list person for many MANY years, so a list it is for every day.  I'm in control that way, not the day being in control of me.  Plus, I feel better when I've got a list, probably because I'm IN control with that list.

CONGRATULATIONS on First Place!!!  VERY nicely done!

Thanks for a thoughtful, well written article Amber (a definite '5'). Your driving analogy really 'drives' the point home for me, and gives me a mental picture I will carry with me. I burned out and was off track for the better part of a year - lose that focus, and everything else follows. I will be using your driving analogy to keep myself on the road!

Thanks for the book recommendation as well. Looks like a good one to add to my collection.

Congrats on the 1st place......that's great.   I like to make a list, eventho I have a retentive memory, most of the time, lately some things have slipped my mind.   It couldn't be age that's for sure!  I love having a list of what needs to be done each day.  Most important at the top and so on down the list.  Good article, I enjoyed it.

Okay, I managed to find a free hour, so I'm going to try to post to all of you before I have to hit the road again.

Michele ~ Thanks!  I guess we sometimes find meaning in a post that applies to other areas besides what was intended.  I was reading a post about organizing photos last week and found a great message for life in general.  I guess it's as much about what we read into a message as it is about what the writer says in it.

Aziz ~ Thanks, and I'm glad you liked the post.  Haven't we talked today in another post?  :-)

Mariana ~ You and Tim deserve as much recognition for your posts.  They were great!  More important than a single competition, though, you provide quality content nearly every day.  That's what really counts.

Ann ~ What matters is that you find what works for you and do that, no matter how crazy or pointless it may seem to someone else.  I'm very particular about the way I manage my to-do list, too.  If I don't do it a certain way, the things just don't get done.  It's good that you experimented with the new method.  You never know when you'll find a better way to do something.  Give and take, I guess.

Renee ~ Thanks so much!  I'm glad you enjoyed it, and I guess the message can be applied to almost every area of our lives.

George ~ As always, thanks for the kind words.  I hope you're right about me getting where I'm going.  That's the plan!  :-)

Sue ~ I'm not sure that I was awake when you posted this morning.  You should've called!  ;-)

Colleen ~ Thanks so much!  I'm really glad you liked the post.  Of course, it was great to win the contest, but I really just enjoy putting together the posts.  I think the feeling I get from just accomplishing that feat is plenty enough for me.

Joan ~ Thanks!  You're right, it is about integrity and about being true to yourself.

Tim ~ As I told Mariana, the two of you did an amazing job with your posts, as you do with your blogs every day.  Do check out the book.  It's straightforward, easy to follow, and easy to implement.

Lisa & Robert ~ Thanks!  I think it's a lot easier to get the message (and even write the message) than it is to live by it, so I hope everyone (including myself) can find a way to apply it.  I slack off sometimes, as you can tell from the post.

Naoma ~ Thanks!  I'm glad you stopped by!

Beth ~ I think it's much easier to get off course than it is to stay on it.  We all waver from time to time.  I think that's the main reason I like the Rain.  It seems to keep me on track.  I can find encouragement and inspiration each and every day.   Oh, and definitely read the book.  I liked it just for it's simplicity - no big schemes or anything, just real strategies that really work.

Roger ~ I, too, am glad we had this contest.  I've found some amazing bloggers to follow, and it's definitely been great having a lot of good content to read.  Everyone really shined this week.  I'm glad you enjoyed the post and hope that it helps you in some small way.

Nick ~ Thanks for emailing your office!  I hope everyone enjoys it!  :-)

Jeff ~ Whoa, I think I'm with Mariana on this one, are we expected to maintain this quality?  That might be tough.  I'll do my best not to let you down.  I had to go back and read it again myself this morning.  I thought, "Was it that good?  I might need to go back and take my own advice again."  Thanks for keeping up with my blog!  Good luck to you, too!

Phylena ~ I think about this often, too, and wonder sometimes how we let our lives get so out of control at times.  We really have the power to do so much more than we believe most times.  I have to remind myself of this often.

Ardell ~ I'm glad you found the Katherine Hepburn quote.  Sometimes things get lost in the comments, and I wasn't sure if anyone would see it.  :-)

Tony ~ You had me wondering for a second - monthly contest?  I heard the thud of Mark falling from here.  ;-)

Laura ~ Thanks for "bookmarking" me!  ;-)  You may have your bad days like the rest of us, but from what I know of you, it seems that you're doing just fine in the driving department!  :-)

Lysa ~ Thanks so much!  I hope you'll visit again to see how I'm doing with it.  To be continued...  ;-)

Paul ~ You're the first guy I've ever heard admit to stopping to check the directions!  ;-)  That's good to hear.  Let me know how it turns out.

Ginger ~ You're right, we can get off course for different reasons and for different lengths of time.  I guess it's good to have fellow Rainers to keep us in check!

Jeff ~ Thanks!  Sometimes it's hard not to jump off (drive off...whatever) with everyone else.  ;-)

Laurie ~ I'm really glad you liked it, and thanks so much for the compliment!

Brad ~ (Bradski) Thanks for following my blog!  That's a great compliment!

Toby ~ Thanks!  I'm honored that you think I'm a good blogger/writer.

Rick & Ines ~ Easy now, I don't think I mentioned anything about driving aggressively (or did I?).  ;-)  From where I sit (in my car), it looks like you're in full control!  You are one of the many bloggers who keep this place going!  You deserve honors way more than I do!  :-)

John ~ I'm glad you're following my journey!  It's good to have all of you keeping me company on the trip.  ;-)  I hope you're right about the future.  Thanks so much for all the wonderful compliments and especially for following my blog!

Patricia ~ Thanks!  I used to be so much better about remembering things, but now I have to write everything down.  It's crazy, but I've finally figured out not to test my memory too much!  ;-)

***

I hope I haven't missed anyone.  Thanks so much, everyone, for taking the time to leave comments!  I really appreciate all of you!  I hope you'll all follow my blog in the future!  Thanks again!

Mark thanks for your great idea, your encouragment to everyone to write, reading all the entries and making the decisions!  I would have missed the opportunity to learn from this.

Thanks again Amber for this post....something I am always struggling with...focus!

Thanks, Deborah.  I would have missed a lot of great articles, too, if this contest hadn't happened, as well as some great bloggers.

Great post, focus will alway produce the results you want, and its as easy to lose as it is to gain.

My experience has led me to think that most agents are not very organized.  We are great in sales and many of the other aspects of this business, but organization is a learned tool.  Whether one has a coach or not, it just takes some determination to lay down the plan and hard work to stick to it.  You are definitely on the right road!

Amber,

Congratulations on your winning post!  (You also found the perfect graphic.)  I've been in the business for 30 years and it still is necessary to stop the car once in awhile at a rest stop.

Luke ~ Thanks so much for the compliment!  It's good to know I'm not the only one struggling with this.

Brian ~ You're right, it is SO easy to lose focus.  I really have to work at it.

Adam & Sharon ~ I think you're right.  We are not very organized in this profession.  We definitely have to work hard to maintain it (assuming we ever find it in the first place). ;-)

Eric ~ If this "gig" doesn't work out, I might consider your offer!  ;-)  Either way, I'd be honored to be a guest blogger anytime!  Thanks for the compliment!

Linda ~ Thanks!  I love that graphic, but then again, I love black and white photos!  If after 30 years, you're still stopping to check the map, I guess I can rest a little more easily and just enjoy the scenery!

Amber,

This post was so very good for so many reasons.  Not only is it educational but it is inspiring.  What more could you want in a blog? Keep up the good work, it seems that you have the right road map to get where you want to go now and the perfect person to ride shotgun with you. :)

Congratulations again on your win!

Great post, great tips.  But what happens when I have been riding in the backseat?  I have been so busy that I can't drive anymore.  I've needed a driver so I can work in the backseat while on the road.  I feel best when driving, but I get behind and then have to sit in the back and hope my driver knows where to go as I get caught up on work en route.

 Advice?

Thanks, Brad.  I'm not really sure I have the answer for you.  I guess if you have a reliable driver, you may be all right.

Amber very nice post, the best I've read in a long time. Keeping on track is very difficult I find it to be my biggest problem keeping focused. I try to accomplish to many things all at the same time and then find my self off track. I do however find that when I write out my daily plan each day and follow it like a check list I am very productive. My problem has always been keeping up with the check list.

If your ever in my neck of the woods during a road trip stop by, Love to take a ride with ya, your picture looks might fine!

Thanks for the compliments, Gary, and I'm the same way with a list.  I finally got smart enough to keep everything in one notebook that I carry with me all the time.  That has helped a lot.

Amber

I have the note book been carrying it around for years, because of your blog I've decided to go through all the papers shoved in it and started creating a new things to do list, hopefully I will keep active with it.

Thanks again for the blog, that ride offer is still good.

Amber, I realize it is probably late to comment on a Blog two months old but you must understand, it seems we become so busy it is difficult to find the time to enjoy what others are saying. In any event your award was well deserved. I really enjoyed your approach to "righting your ship" and recalibrating your compass so to speak. I will follow your advice and reexamine my professional life as well.

Thanks, Lyle

I just wanted to let you know that I have been on track with my note book that I call my map for life. My productivity is showing strong gains. And yes, I do have to pull over sometimes to check where I am going.

Integrity is in balance!
