I envision some dorky little dweeb...

By

There seems to be a proliferation of well-known deaths on Facebook.  I'm not sure I understand.

The most recent I've seen was this one right here... Joe Frazier's death at the age of 67.  It's one of those things that really tugs at the heartstrings... since you can see Muhammed Ali on the mat, right behind him.

Everyone can identify, and feel for the guy.

What's wrong with that?  Why nothing at all, except for the fact that Smokin' Joe Frazier actually died in 2011.

For some reason someone out there, or perhaps many someones, is creating facebook posts talking about the deaths of famous people, and spreading them around as though they just ocurred... I envision some dorky little dweeb, sitting in front of the computer's glow in their parents basement, snickering to themselves... "hee, hee, hee... they fell for it!".

I fell for one recently... someone posted Dave Brubek's death... and I shared it... not realizing that he'd actually passed away in 2012.  A simple google search would have saved me from disseminating erroneous information out there.

Alan ~ I've shared emails that I found out later were not true.   'sigh'   Then I say to myself, "That did seem a bit tooo weird. Why didn't I check Snopes?" Oh well, we're only human.  I'm still feeling sad about David Bowie and Alan Rickman passing on to the Pearly Gates.

Alan, All that said, lately it seems Facebook gets me news faster than the normal news outlets, just as long as I pay attention to what's real and what some dweeb in the basement has made up.

online news (not necessarily Facebook) is always more current than today's mainstream media.

Hubby and I don't do social media, but can easily understand how information can often be so misconstrued. Often times we find ourselves Googling to see if somebody is dead or alive. What's amazing to us is many times we'll see a movie or something and realized the main character has been dead for years, but yet remember few details of it ever being reported.

you might be better off not being that socially-mediated.

Well, if you didn't know Dave Brubek was dead, then it's news to you!  I wouldn't feel badly about reposting it.   It's not the same as passing on a Snopes-type misinformation.  He's still dead.

no... you're right... it's not the same... but they are presenting it as though it just happened.

Alan- it's gotten so bad that I feel like I need to "Google" everything I read!  Besides, there's so much information assaulting us every hour of the day, I can't keep everything straight.

I surely google (or snope) everything that I consider "sharing".

In addition to being new to real estate, I'm also brand new to Facebook.  In the month that I've been on, I've been amazed at some of the things that people put out there.  Too much time on their hands, I guess.

It's totally strange what people will do, isn't it?  Posting deaths that occurred years ago as new to get some action on social media is definitely odd.

What?? You mean to say that everything I read on Facebook isn't true?

uh... no.... that's not what I meant... of course, everything you read on Facebook is true.  yeah, that's it... true.

You had me at "dorky little dweeb"

It is amazing the amount of time basement dwellers have to waste on nonsence.  Luciell ball dies in the comfort of her home....
