Stay in touch with past clients/your sphere on Valentine's Day

Services for Real Estate Pros with Marte Cliff Copywriting

According to History.com, more than 62% of Americans celebrate Valentine's Day.

With approximately one billion cards sent each year, it is second only to Christmas in its impact on the Valentine Candy greeting card industry.

I have no idea who keeps track of this, or how they do it, but they report that 85% of those cards are purchased by women.

Although considered by some to be a purely romantic holiday, many do also send affectionate greetings to parents, children, grand-children, siblings, and friends.

That means it's a great time to send a short greeting to your past clients, your sphere of influence, and the folks in your farm area.

But what can you say that won't sound "too sugary?"

How about sharing some Valentine trivia?

 For instance:

  • Valentine's Day was first declared an official holiday by England's King Henry VIII – in 1537.
  • During the 17th century it became popular to send elaborate handmade love messages, cards, and gifts to your sweetheart.
  • The ancient Celtics gave hand-carved wooden love spoons. Images carved into the spoons included hearts, plus keys and keyholes to symbolize that the receiver held the key to the giver's heart.
  • In the Middle Ages, people believed that the first unmarried person of the opposite sex that they met on Valentine's Day morning was the person they were destined to marry.
  • In Medieval times, girls ate unusual foods on St. Valentine's Day to make them dream of their future husband.
  • In some ancient cultures, it was believed that if a girl saw a robin flying overhead on Valentine's Day, she would marry a sailor.

So - write those people you really need to stay in touch with - Wish them a Happy Valentine's Day and share some trivia. You never know, they just might pass it along to their friends, along with the name of the superior agent who took the time to share it with them.

I've seen some really great ideas floating about lately for the occassion.  I think I don't have time this year, but I'll plan better next year.  This year I'm drowning in tax stuff.

Interesting trivia, Marte.  It's amazing to look back at some of these traditions.

Beth Atalay I expect that in those days all foods were organic.

Bob "RealMan" Timm Yes - you wouldn't want to send a light-hearted card to a stuffed shirt!

Tammy Lankford Ugh - I don't even want to think about tax stuff - but I know that day is coming soon.

Women of Westchester Working Together Another one I just read in one my Agatha Christie mysteries is a little more recent - less than 100 years ago. Unmarried ladies put a slice of wedding cake under their pillows so they'd dream of the man they were going to marry.

The idea is to do something not everyone is doing and let people know you are still in the picture. That is an excellent idea and a good time to stand out and connect.

Karen Winters, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices KoenigRubloff You're welcome. I really enjoy finding this kind of nonsense. Nobody needs to know it - it's just fun.

Joan Cox I think all of our "lesser holidays" are a good excuse to contact past clients, your sphere, and even future clients. St. Patrick's Day is next!

Marte Cliff it's simple now-a-days to stay connected with our loved ones.

(And wow, it started in 1537!)

There is a hit movie made in Bollywood (Indian Cinema) based on this theme --

"In the Middle Ages, people believed that the first unmarried person of the opposite sex that they met on Valentine's Day morning was the person they were destined to marry."

(Set up in modern days, though.)
