Should ActiveRain Groups Go the Way of the Dinosaur?

By

Things change and so do people. One of the fastest changing areas is the Internet and IT. In the many years I have been associated with ActiveRain, the platform and software has gone through many iterations. There were some ideas, such as “Call the Shot” which came in with a lot of hoopla and like the dinosaur, went into extension without much fan fare.
Earlier today, Patricia Feager mentioned something that I have not though of in many years, ActiveRain Groups. Groups are smaller communities within the ActiveRain shell typically focused on a particular interest. Groups are created by other members and at one time, this seemed to be the craze. As of this post, there are just over 7300 groups. Most are probably inactive.
My question is, should inactive groups be purged from the system or should groups go away all together? I started some groups years ago and as a moderator, I am ashamed to say that I have done nothing with them in years. And how about the moderators that started groups and no longer are ActiveRain participants?
Today, we seem to live in an age where less is more. There are a lot of things vying for our time. Is it time for groups to go the way of the dinosaur? And that my friends, is my 2¢’s worth for today.

P.S. I just deleted some 20 groups that I no longer have time to moderate or have not had a posting in over a year.

Good morning Michael.  I post to three groups, of which I started each one.  Because of something that happened to me last year with a group I joined I will not join any group I did not start.  If they want to do away with them It's alright with me.

The biggest problem with Groups is the Moderator !!!!! As Groups lose this person , chaos reins ! Eventually the Group becomes a toxic dumping ground for MLS listings( way off topic).

AR must come up with a very simple method for interested members to claim vacated Moderator positions.

I think the groups could be eliminated....But that is just my opinion!

I view this as a ActiveRain management / ownership issue.  I have not used the groups in years and don't plan to.  It does not affect the operation of the site.

Michael I am not sure of what value groups have.  I never created one, but do belong to a few.   I have notice that a few of my groups have been deleted without me deleting them.  So I think AR has been doing some house cleaning, but 7,300 groups are way to many and will take a while to clean them up.

I never understood why members were allowed to create groups which were duplicates of groups already in existence.  Groups were one of the things which I do not thing AR thought out very well.

I don't usually look for posts by way of the group, but I do add my posts to 5 groups.  Not sure why, just habit I guess.

Hello Michael ... very well said my friend and I have noticed very low posts to my many groups at AR.

Around 3-4 years ago when the AR network started creating their own groups, this was the beginning of the end for groups founded by AR members!

Just another way for the AR network to control it's members ...

Michael, I think "groups" like dinosaurs go through a process of natural selection and evolution. Eventually the less adaptable and relevant groups will go away while the survivors will do just that....survive. Purging inactive groups makes sense OR how about a push, "contest", or attempt to revive some of those groups that made sense...allow an interested AR member the opportunity to bring a good idea back to life....just thinking out loud.

I would not miss the ActiveRain groups if they were eliminated. Facebook groups are a better alternative.
