The World Is Updating Today…

In addition to being a real estate agent, I am part owner of a food brokerage company in Cleveland. For those of you wondering what a food broker might be, it is a lot like a real estate broker. Instead of selling houses, manufacturers pay you a percentage to sell their goods rather than have their own sales staff. Our company started in 1907, and I have been here for 37 years.

I got the bright idea to get into real estate when I relocated our office 12 years ago. I fell in love with the real estate business and decided it would be fun to do when I “retired”.

In addition to an office in Cleveland, we have a sister office in Pittsburgh. The Pittsburgh office is about 4 times our size and that is where our computer system and IT people are located. Last month our Cleveland office was suffering from slow Internet speed; and I asked Cathy, the IT person in Pittsburgh, if she would look into this issue. Cathy came back with the fact that Microsoft updates its software the second Tuesday of each month, and with that update…the whole world updates their software over the next couple days. She theorized that everyone downloading these updates could slow up the Internet. I have no idea if she is right or wrong…but it seemed logical since we were having issues during this update time period…and the issue resolved itself the following day.

In any event, this morning Cathy sent me an email reminding me that yesterday was the second Tuesday of the month, and she ended with, “the world is updating today.”

“The world is updating today” caused me to smile and think to myself, wouldn’t it be great if that were really true. How great would it be, if the world would go through a software update where all the glitches and flaws were simply repaired? How wonderful if hate, envy, and greed simply vanished…and tomorrow the world became a better place and each one of us became a better version of ourselves.

Then I got to thinking about this a little more and my faith sort of started to kick in and I thought to myself…don’t we already have an “update” available to us already? Isn’t there a better version of ourselves just waiting to be uploaded?

Each day presents us with an opportunity to walk the road less traveled. Each day offers us the opportunity to be a blessing to one another instead of a curse. Bringing hope and joy to others is an option. Perhaps, instead of waiting for the other guy to make the first move, maybe we could be an instrument of peace by being less judgmental…by loving more and hating less. Perhaps the world won’t update today, but maybe we can update. I will end with a verse from my favorite hymn, Let There Be Peace on Earth.

Let peace begin with me

Let this be the moment now.

With every step i take

Let this be my solemn vow.

To take each moment

And live each moment

With peace eternally.

Let there be peace on earth,

And let it begin with me.

I do wish we had times when the network shut down and EVERYONE could just clean it up rather that waist more storage. Unfortuately there will always be people who want to work and take advantage of everyone else being off!

Ellen,

Thank you for your contribution, and yes...I suppose you are right. But every once and a while you read about someone who made a difference...who shed light where there had only been darkness. There are angels who walk amoung us showing us that there is a better way to live.

Have a great day!

Thomas, I really believe as we get older we mellow out and figure out what is most important in life. Thanks for an excellent post.

Thanks, Mike. You are right, I am certainly a lot mellower...at least I think I am. My wife may hold a different view.
