Are your customers thinking Green? Recycling is slow to make a start in rural areas.

recycling binsWith more and more people thinking "Green" and I don't just mean cos it's springtime, it occurred to me that in our area there seems less recycling than a few years ago. I have not had a garbage service that offers recycling bins for years. Now this may be due to the fact I am now in a more rural area in north Georgia, so I put in a search for centers that have say bottle banks and other recycling collections.

Here is a wonderful site that I found. You just type in your zip code and it will give you a list of places that accept recycling materials and their information and location.

I have also noticed that now all the major grocery stores are offering an alternative to "plastic bags" you purchase the reusable bag for around a dollar. Have you noticed anyone using them?
Just a thought, in Ireland they charge you if you insist on plastic and now practically everyone uses the  bags you can reuse.

I can remember my Grandmother always had a shopping bag and back when I was growing up in England you always had to pay for plastic. Unfortunately they stopped charging and guess what?

Another thing I have noticed is the huge increase in plastic packaging for vegetables, again in the UK they package fruit and veg in strong plastic containers, for goodness sakes, can't we use a brown paper bag? I will say though that in Europe they do make it easy to recycle, with large bottle banks and collection bins all over the place.

If you know of any grocery stores that offer drop off points or collection bins please share your thoughts on this....

Thanks.

I grew up in a rural area, and my parent (and grandparents, etc.) were all practicing recycling then.  And back then they did it not necessarily for the environment, but just because that was the way they did things!  Compost piles, recycling metal, etc.  Been doing it since I was born, thanks to my parents.

If everyone would just do 1 thing it would make a huge difference!!

I bought bags that I reuse for the grocery store.  I also have cute bags that I bring to the mall.  I HATE using the plastic bags.

Thanks for the recycling link, Allison.  Our area is becoming more "green friendly" all the time.  When I moved here 5 years ago from California, "being green" was sort of scoffed at, but people are becoming more aware and trying to do their part. (Of course in California, environmental conciousness is the norm)  In this area, the local Publix and Winn Dixie stores have a bin to deposit old plastic bags and also offer the recyclable bag (which I use).  We all are provided recyclable bins by the trash service and recyle, paper, plastic and aluminum.  Every bit helps.

I agree, every little bit helps. Kroger have these new bags where I shop, to cart bottles in. Much stronger than the other expensive cardboard containers they used to hand out and these are free in my local store. I took 3 over to my family in Spain.

One other thing that amazed me over there was the huge plastic bottles they have for drinking water, as you really can't  drink the tap water everyone buys loads of giant plastic water bottles, the shame is that they don't have refill facilities, so all the containers are thrown away, and lets hope into a recycling bin.
