Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia dies at 79

Justice Antonin Scalia has died at the age of 79.  With all of the political strife in both parties in the campaign for President, this has created a real question about who will replace him on the court and who will name the next Supreme Court Justice.

The previous Justices that were named by President Obama were liberal - but Justices Sotomayor and Kagen replaced liberal Justices so the balance of the Court was not altered.  This will potentially change the balance of the Supreme Court for a generation.  It is possible that the President will not be able to nominate and get confirmation of a candidate before the election.  Film at 11.

Justice Scalia was a brilliant legal scholar who was an originalist in his view of the Constitution.  I have read his books and some of his opinions.  I shall miss him.

My thoughts are with his wife and 9 children.  I should note that perhaps his closest friend on the Court was liberal Justice Ginsburg - clearly not because of his agreement with her on the merits of the cases.

First, my condolences to Justice Scalia's wife, and to his nine children.

Second, I fear for my country.  Obama will appoint some far-left liberal, and the Senate will not use their power to stop the appointment.

Third, the Conspiracy Theorists are out en masse  after this announcement.  Just the other day, the Supreme Court crossed Obama's path by stopping his climate change power grab.  Now, a conservative Justice "dies in his sleep" on a ranch in remote west Texas.  Makes you wonder.

Fred Griffin - at 79 you really do not need conspiracies to believe that people may simply die.

I would be surprised if any of these conspiracies are true... If someone loved Obama so much as to arrange Scalia's death, why do it in Obama's last year and not earlier?

My condolences to Justice Scalia's family.

I think there is an easy fix: Nominate Sri Srinivasan, he was unanimously confirmed (which I believe is unprecedented) by the Senate to the US Court of Appeals in DC... the same court Scalia came from (and I think 3 other siting Supreme Court Justices).

Of course, the Republicans will want to block ANY Obama nomination, but that certainly opens a very dangerous door. If they succeed, who's to say that the next Republican president who needs to fill a vacancy isn't blocked in the same manner... what becomes the 'cut-off,' 23 months?  Besides, Reagan got Anthony Kennedy confirmed in the last year of his presidency.
