Justice Antonin Scalia has died at the age of 79. With all of the political strife in both parties in the campaign for President, this has created a real question about who will replace him on the court and who will name the next Supreme Court Justice.
The previous Justices that were named by President Obama were liberal - but Justices Sotomayor and Kagen replaced liberal Justices so the balance of the Court was not altered. This will potentially change the balance of the Supreme Court for a generation. It is possible that the President will not be able to nominate and get confirmation of a candidate before the election. Justice Scalia was a brilliant legal scholar who was an originalist in his view of the Constitution. I have read his books and some of his opinions. I shall miss him.
My thoughts are with his wife and 9 children. I should note that perhaps his closest friend on the Court was liberal Justice Ginsburg - clearly not because of his agreement with her on the merits of the cases.
