Be DecisiveIn the world of Real Estate you see a lot human nature. The good, the bad, the strange.

One pet peeve I am starting to have with some people is the inability to come around to a decision. Yes, having more input into a decision can make you make a better decision. But analysis paralysis is like a law of diminishing returns. More and more input does not eventually lead to a better decision. It leads to confusion and too many options. I found the following quote from Ross Perot which I think I am going to use more often now with fence sitters, and the ones who say, "I'll think about it."

If you see a snake, kill it. Don't appoint a committee on snakes.

Make good decisions. But don't take a lifetime to do it. Life is too short.

Gary

one thing we are running into is too much inventory, and the promise of better deals has frozen buyers in place it is misrable..

Oh Gary! You done it again! LOL This is too true. I love the analysis paralysis but I really love the if you see a snake kill it don't appoint a committee. That is so true in all areas of life. I was appointed to an adhock committee for the Historical Foundation committee. Now what the heck do they need a committee for the committee. I decided not to participate but go to an inspection instead.

You are so right! More input can lead to confusion.

Christina: Awesome signature!

Konnie: Don't get stuck their yourself or with clients.

Ken: Some days are easier than others.

Steve: Too much to choose from is like the kid in the candy store.

Becky: A committee for a committe. That's too funny. That's how government works.

Lindsay: I think we need to help people narrow down their choices to what makes sense.

Hi Gary...I just may have to resort to using that also.  There seems to be alot of indecision going around.

Thanks,

Kathleen

but why oh why would you kill a snake? It might be a good one for your garden. Or it might be a lawyer with a spell cast upon him. I'd just run for the hills... :-)

Hi Gary,

Yep, it seems like for some it takes a while. But it seems to me like they usually need more information, I feel that's where I can (hopefully) help out.

BTW, I've also found that those who are more successful in life are those who domake fairly fast decisions, i.e. entrepreneurs.

Or, as Nike (I think) put it- Just do it!  Make the decision already.  Make a list of pros and cons, and the longer list wins.  Flip a coin.  And if the clients are unable to decide, maybe WE need to move on.  I mean, how many $400K homes can you look at- they are all crappy in crappy areas.  choose one already!

Oh, my frustration with one particular buyer just came out!  Oops!

Many buyers right now are waiting and waiting and waiting to make a decision!!

I struggle with decisions myself.  Always weighing the options every which way.  Getting advise from others, taking that information and determining what is right for me.  I don't always make the right decision but using this process I haven't regretting any decision I've made.  Now if I ran into a snake I'd just kill it.

Gary,
May I just say AMEN!  My Dad always says "a wrong decision is better than no decision".

Gary:  Man I am seeing a whole lot of this sort of behavior lately.  And then when they make a decision, trying to get them to closing can be a REAL problem as it seems like buyers and sellers both seem more prone now to throwing up barriers to getting deals done...  (I.E. my repair negotiations lately have been a NIGHTMARE!)...  Best to you my friend!  Steve

hmmm i wonder what our clients would say if we said..."if you see a snake kill it!''....lol......anyhow - when people take that long do you think they even want to buy.......I wonder if the strategy - of saying ' i don't think you're ready yet.....maybe we should try again next year'.......?.........reverse psychology and all!  grin

When their own big bucks are involved, people tend to look at things from every angle and then some. It is our job as professionals to help them stop analyzing and get on with it.

When presented straightforward some may realize if they wait too long...they surely miss the boat :)

Kathleen: Some decisions do not have to be hard.

Charles: That's a great one. Inspectors are rooted in common sense : )

Keith & Robin: Right, nothing happens unless you do SOMETHING!

Joan: It is something we have to live with, although I'm trying to figure out ways to get through it.

Sharon: Good point, we can improve individually too.

Mara: No violence being advocated here. Yes, some snakes are beautiful reptiles if you are into that sort of thing. You're not related to Steve Irwin (Crocodile Hunter) are you ??? : )

Lynda: You are wise beyond your 29 years old. I have heard that about entrepreneurs too, that's why you are at the top of your game.

Carol: That is SOooo funny! They all are crappy. Pick one.

Patricia: The waiting is making us all old.

Nannette: A technique from the book Blink, says make a snap decision and see if you are not right on the money most of the time anyway.

Cynthia: Dad is a smart man, and no decision is a decision.

Marey: Coming from Ross Perot, you know the quote is going to be colorful.

Steve: There are more snags in real estate than you can shake a stick at.

Liz: Try again next year, that should definitely stop the showings for those clients : ) But maybe the reverse psychology might work!

Rosario: That's when we put our conselor hat on, but it is there money. But I try to tell them it is their life and time that they are doing "nothing" too.

Sally: On good houses, I have seen this, they wait and wait, and then poof, that house is gone.

Carol: I'm sure you've had many of these fence sitters along the way. If you think of any of your own tips to get them to move along the way let us all know. We have to watch for this indecision in ourselves too. It can get crippling if it goes on too long.
