On Valentine's Day, we use the word love frequently.
In our everyday use of English language, we use the word, love to describe many things. we might say we love a song, we love our child or we lover our spouse or partner.
Here are ther four Greek words for love with a definitiion:
The first three loves are seen frequently seen in human nature and relationships:
Eros: this is the lowest form of love, it is romatic but also very selfish. Eros only gives in hope of receiving.
Storge: This is a natural affection, such as the feeling a mother feels when she sees her baby for the first time. It can also be used to describe a good feeling one might have for an object such as a car or a favorite pair of shoes.
Phileo: This is brotherly love, it is a give and take type of love and is the highest form of natural love. The noun form of this word, Phildelphia is the word for which the city of brotherly love got it's name.
On the day when we celebrate love, which of these types of love would you want to receive?
Agape: This is supernatural love, it the highest form of love and is totally sacrificial. Agape love can continue giving indefinitely without receiving anything in return.
