Snow Day for the Horses. The last few days have been spring like here in the Colorado Springs area. The sun has been shining and the temperatures have been in the 50's. The snow from our big storm about two weeks ago has almost completely melted. So, I can now enjoy a few of the snow pictures that I took.
When the winter storm came through, my horses were very happy to be able to stay inside their stalls in the barn. (A barn is a VERY good thing to have when the weather gets bad.) However, when the weather cleared up, the horses were just as excited to spend time outside.
These pictures are of Pooh, my quarter horse yearling, playing in the snow.
I was a little apprehensive about him getting hurt on the cow pens or in the deep snow but he was developing so much pent up energy, I was concerned that he might self destruct in the stall. So....I let him out for a little while. Everything turned out fine. He enjoyed playing in the snow.
For those of you who have asked me in the past about how horses handle the Colorado cold: They do fine if: 1) They are healthy and 2) They have their winter hair or they are consistently blanketed. If they are blanketed they are not going to grow as much winter hair. A blanket of adequate weight should keep the horse warm.
These pictures allow you to see Pooh's fuzzy winter coat. His coat isn't too thick because I bring all my horses into the barn every night. Horses that are kept out in pastures 24/7 will grow even thicker coats.
Some people put blankets on their horses in the winter. Although I have at least one blanket for every one of my horses, I am only blanketing one of my horses this year. He has always worn a blanket and is very happy in a blanket.
This is an old picture of Honey playing in snow last year. Overall, she hates wearing a blanket.
If you have any questions about barns, blankets or horse property, don't hesitate to send me an email or call. I'm not an expert on horse blankets by any means but I can maybe point you to someone who is. .....Sondra
