Always learning new lessons…

Trying to convince a parent/parents to move nearer to you or in with you proved to be more difficult than I ever dreamed. I’ve been at this task for at least a year now and I think I have finally made some progress. Unfortunately, it had to happen after my mom recently fell and broke her hip. Sure wish we could have avoided that fall. But I think this has made her realize she can’t live on her own anymore. I do understand how difficult it is for people to give up their independence.

She is slowly recovering in a rehabilitation facility (nursing home) and once she is released from there she will be sent home with therapy coming to her house. After that is when “we hope” we can transition her to south Florida.

This trip has taught me many lessons. The first lesson that it taught me is that Brad (my son) and we have a great partnership! We are able to continue working our business as a real team! Another thing that I’ve learned is that I no longer want to live anywhere it snows, sleets, and freezes. I had enough of that when we lived in South Dakota for six years. And last but not least, I’m very thankful for my husband who not only understands why I need to be here helping my mom, but has been a tremendous support system!!  There aren’t many men out there begging their mother-in-law to move in with them.

I think we will have many days ahead of us when my mom will go back and forth with the decision to either to come to south Florida and live with us or stay in PA. I will need to find patience to be able to guide her gently on this journey and we will both learn some new lessons together!

Hi Kim, it is so good of you to be there to help. It is the obligation of people to help their family. Good for you.

Thank you Noah Seidenberg

My mom has been wonderful to us over the years and I'm trying to help her see that she deserves better than a nursing home at this stage of her life!!

Your mom needs to be checked for osteoporosis. I have sever osteoprosis which is rare in men and I have been taking perscriptions for it for many years. Dr's will tell you "Mom didn't fall and break her hip, her hip broke and she fell". Check it out Kim Johnson

Bob "RealMan" Timm that is exactly what happened with this "fall"!.

She has been on meds for years for osteoprosis and they haven't really helped. I guess in some ways they did help, these issues didn't start until she was 78. Wishing you lots of luck and strong bones!!

Kim-we were lucky with Larry's mom- she placed herself in a John Knox Village. Very glad you have a good support system.,

Hi Kim.  It is so tough to see our parents aging and we become the parent.  Good luck.
