More than 2,500 marchers and countless beautifully costumed performers honored the Chinese lunar Year of the Monkey in 2016 San Francisco’s annual Chinese New Year Parade.
The famous festivity is a long-standing city tradition that dates shortly after Gold Rush days to 1860s. The event has been named one of the top 10 parades in the world and is known as one of the biggest celebrating the Lunar New Year outside of Asia. It is anticipated that over 3 millions people watched the parade. There were over 100 entries and over 20+ major floats. Participants march down with streets with flags, ipad, iphone, drums and light lanterns. The longest was a 29 feet Golden Dragon taking over 100 people to operate in unison as the followers are able to follow feet of frontal partner who often takes a turn while swing their dragon body.
Nothing is completed until you have finished annual Chinese New Year feast the night before the New Year. It is done with all family members.
The parada is an annual event often at night for its specutacular lighting and fire crackers. This year it started at 5:15 PM February 20th at the corner of second and Market Streets. It weaves its way to Chinatown and ended at Jackson and Kearny Street.
