Now, I'm not very good at skipping stones.  My husband can skim them across the water with the grace of a ballet dancer.  I on the other hand echo a haunting similarity to a hippo trying to tapdance.  I do love to attempt my poor skills in the beauty of the Little Spokane River.

Perhaps serious nature lovers would say that the best way to experience this rare freshwater marshland is by quietly paddling a canoe or kayak down the river. These stealthful observers may see a wide variety of songbirds, woodpeckers, raptors, and waterfowl  (At least the ones my poorly aimed rocks haven't taken out).

They may point out great blue heron rookery that can be found in the tall cottonwoods by the river.  Beaver, muskrat, porcupines, raccoons, coyotes, marmots, whitte-tailed deer, and others -- even moose -- call this place home. Nature experts remember to stay away from wildlife, such as bear,cougar, and moose, particularly during calf season. I've even read that any wild animal will take extreme measures to protect its young ones. Rattlesnakes also are said toinhabit this area, (real ones---not your mother-in-law) although they are seldom seen, so they experts tell us to walk with awareness. There are even signs that remind us we are guests in their home and to please respect them.  Besides, a pissed off bear is a scary sight.  I've heard that they are fast runners, but I'd really like to never test that theory  :)  I personally don't think that these animals have been within 2000 feet of the area, but I'd love to see them.  Still, there is something very special about taking your family hiking along the trails laughing and singing stupid kids songs at the top of your lungs [you know...that's probably why I've never seen any wildlife, funny thought].  So, pack up the kids, grab your camera, and enjoy sinking some rocks!
