As a Matter of Heart Women

by Patricia Feager 2/23/2015

So many people on ActiveRain have wondered what happened to you? Where aqre you? So to honor and celebrate your life, I felt compelled to tell your story, the way you would have wanted it to be told.

For God's sake Women you have to take care of your teeth! According to the Academy of General Dentistry, women who suffer with chronic periodontal disease have an overall higher risk for a heart attack. Oh sure, you never have enough time or money to take care of your own personal hygiene and we know how many hours you spend driving clients around showing houses, sitting on your rump behind the computer running comps, skipping on healthy meals, writing blog posts, and maybe even playing solitary into the wee hours of the night because you can't sleep, but for God sake woman, you have to brush your teeth and floss! For cry peet, many of you women with cats, take better care of them, than you do yourself!

Has your cat ever brought you a toothbrush and reminded you to brush your teeth??? Has a cat ever taken you to the doctors and made sure you were in good health? Do you take better care of your cat than yourself? You get the picture!

Woman! You have got to take your teeth and your heart seriously. Behind every stage of periodontal disease, the heart is a ticking bomb waiting to go off. Studies have shown that same yucky bacteria found in gum disease can enter the bloodstream resulting in a bam! Thank you Mam for the doctor and hospital bills, but there's not much more we can do for you if you get to the point of no return!  But, we can send you over to the Cardiologist who may be able to save your life. You see, there's this procedure that you may not know about, so why don't you check yourself into the hospital and we'll get a surgeon to cut open your chest and fix your heart AFTER you spend a small, but very worthwhile fortune on your teeth - then maybe you'll have a candy's chance.

A cardiologist may recommend some strict dental treatments and procedures to help get you in the right direction for a healthy heart and lifestyle, but if you have been neglecting your own needs for too long, and the older you get, the worse it gets, the harder it is for any doctor, regardless of how great they are to save a life! And don't forget, my own dentist has 4 kids to put through college, so he loves to make money (for the sake of his kids, and of course, to help you too!)

There has been plenty of research done between the relationship between oral health and cardiac health. Just check the information out from the American Heart Association. Or if you need to see graphics, check this out:

*Source Recommendations for Heartorg.

ActiveRain Women and Men who need to pay attention to their teeth before advanced gum disease destroys the life out of them! The message is CLEAR! Your heart is important - you only get one to live by! When you stop and think about all the junk that goes into that mouth of yours, you have to wonder, why aren't we brushing and flossing several times a day? Why is it so easy to take care of everyone elses needs before your own? Yeah! Yeah!

There! I've said it all, let's get brushing and live longer!  Now! If you can't sleep after reading this post, READ THIS:

God bless you one and all! Now brush your teeth and go to bed!!!

I enjoyed reading Karen Anne's unique perspective on things.  She is missed.

The thing is you can still have good teeth and one just happens to become abscessed. It can kill you. Almost killed my cousin. She had a crack and didn't realize it. Became infected/abscessed. This was a Friday morning and she had an appointment on a Monday. The dentist put her into an ambulance. For those who have osteoporsis such as myself, and get the Prolia shot, now we have to be careful of necrosis of the gums as a side effect. I have had dental issues and have spent thousands on my teeth. Not fun. ANd yes make yourself gag and brush that tongue. Last dentist I had got mad at me because I was gagging from his bad breath. Smelled like rotting cow hide frtom the back side of the cow.

Patricia ~ I read Karen Anne's last post from 2013 and I was deeply moved.  It was poignant, raw, and very human.  She said...

"Nobody knew I wasn't SuperGirl.  I hid it well.
Why it isn't working this time... is beyond me.  Dammit.
As I said... I am totally, absolutely Petrified."

Thank you for the reminder that we need to practice self-love and self-care. Sending heart hugs and warm thoughts to Karen Anne.  Miss her candor and spirit in the rain.

Melinda (Mel) Peterson - when it comes to health, I think we can all be frail and scared. It helps to have family and a good support system. It's too bad her daughter didn't communicate with someone from ActiveRain. I know there has been an outpouring of love from the very beginning.

I hope you take care of yourself too.

Lynn B. Friedman  - since none of us knows the daughter, we can't judge. There are always two sides to every story. Maybe there are other health or personal issues with the daughter that we don't know. Regardless, it's a sad, sad case.

I would like to think, especially towards the end of her emails, she knew she was surrounded by AR friends who cared. What bothers me is that darn HIPPA law that prevents people with good intentions, people who could potentially help, from ever having the opportunity to do so. The last two times I went to the Kindred Hospital, I was asked to leave because I wasn't on their visitor list. The time before that the doctor let me in for about 35 seconds and then said, it's time for you leave.  Thankfully, they let me in before that and I got to see Karen Anne and tell her how many people were praying for her. She smiled and nodded. She couldn't speak because she had the tracheotomy but I know she undestood.

When I went to the place where she was living. The owner of the property told me, she was no longer there and she couldn't provide any information because it was illegal and against their building policy. She wouldn't take my card, name or phone number.

I tried numerous times with her last Broker - he was in the same spot I was - nobody would give him any information either.

I think the only hope we have now, is that someone outside of AR would read this blog post and shed some light on this mystery.

Michael J. Perry - the information you provided was so powerful. It sounds like you had a great dentist when you were such a young man and it resulted in good health. That would be the makings of a great motivational post too!

My mother was a firm believer in baking soda. Many, many years ago, I was happy that Arm & Hammer came out with a powered baking soda container, specifically designed for brushing the teeth. It was like very fine baking soda and tasted great too. But they took it off the market.

In recent years I hears a few people talking about the pulling method, but I haven't tried it. It sounds like it's worth exploring. Thank you so much for sharing such great information. You may be saving lives by sharing your story! You are absolutely right, it IS important!  I wish you good health. Thank you so much.

Excellent post. Research shows both men and women who have untreated issues with their teeth are potentially at high risk for major heart problems. Congrats on the feature.

Patricia, sainthood, sister! You rocked it for Karen Ann and we can all only hope that someone as truly wonderful as yourself would celebrate us in like fashion! I floss every day, and if you have a good, well...GREAT dentist, they will put the fear of God in you to SERIOUSLY make this a daily habit. And don't use a HARD brush! It also damages your gums. I worked for a female dentist years ago and learned about periodontal disease way-back-when. I can smell it from many steps away!

There are SO many brain problems that can occur from bad teeth, not just the heart. Happy Forever, Karen Ann and you as well, my sweet darlin' girlfriend!

An important warning Patricia, after years of abuse I am feeling the effects of age too and these last few years getting healthy has moved up on the goals priority list.

I think that many of us miss seeing Karen Ann here in the rain and often wonder what happened to her.

Bob Crane - Clearly, you're not the only one guilty as charged. If we are lucky, and heed the signs, I think we stand a better chance at getting healthier. Although life holds no guarantees, it's up to each individual to decide for him/herself to decide what takes precedence, wealth or health. Unfortunately, it takes money to pay the bills and even if one has health insurance, there's no guarantee, nor does everyone have the means to pay deductibles and the difference for what isn't covered. The cost for medical care has reached astonishing heights that most people fear because it can put them in deeper death.

I remember the last week my husband was alive. I was very familiar with what to expect. However, after he died, that last hospital bill was more than 3 times what I ever paid and nothing changed, other than him occupying a hospital bed. There was no life support, resuscitating, organ donations - nothing different, no autopsy, not even with the meds. Also, I was with him when he died so I know for a fact nobody else was in the room and I had to get the nurses!

At that time, hospital bills were coded and when I investigated on my own, I found out one of the codes was for a burn mattress (he was never in a fire) and the other was for a pregnancy procedure (which if this was possible, I should be rich).

As one of Karen Anne's Biggest Fans, I thoroughly enjoyed this post.  She was always tough on me (in a motherly kind of way) and I have missed her terribly.

My brother-in-law is a dentist (I get the family discount... FREE) so I am fortunate enough to protect my heart with Excellent Dental Care!

Thanks so much for this post, wish I had found it sooner.
