Freeze That Abstract!

snowflake

At a closing today I told my Buyer client that they should rent a safety deposit box at their lenders institution. Much to my surprise the lender said “we no longer offer safety deposit boxes, put it in a zip lock bag and toss it into the freezer”.

Really??? I had never heard of this but the closer at the title company jumped right in and said “that’s right; the contents in a freezer very seldom burn”. This is news to me but hey, it makes sense.

On the other hand I myself am NOT about to close my safety deposit box. Maybe putting docs in a home freezer is a pretty safe bet but it’s still not as safe as being off site in a bank vault. I can also see the attraction of keeping them at home where you can get to them anytime but I’m all about security these days.

Many banks have stopped putting in safety deposit boxes.  I myself bought a very large safe and I can put everything I feel I want to protect in there.  all my backup software is in there

Sounds like a good plan William Feela . Now I'm wondering how long data is good for in a fire safe.

Bob "RealMan" Timm Banks are only focusing on profits today. Safe deposit boxes take up too much room and do not generate revenue. Watch, once some genius at a bank discovers that they can gain an edge by offering SDB's again, they will make full circle and they will all be offering them.

I did not realize until today that this is a trend Sandy Padula and Norm Padula, JD, GRI but you are correct, that is the way they are going... for now.

Bob,

What an interesting story about putting documents in freezer bags!  I think that Sandy Padula and Norm Padula, JD, GRI made a good point that safety deposit boxes take up square footage with very little return.  A

Bob- how very interesting! I remember having one for years but we opted for a safe as well. That said, off site storage should be considered for some items at least as a dual backup.

Another concern I have Kathy Streib is that if lenders are telling people to put it in the freezer how long will it take the bad guys to make that their primary target?

RealMan, It may not burn but it could be stolen or get wet. A home safe is a better bet.

I agree Kathleen Daniels , they did say however to put it in a zip lock bag, but I've seen frost inside of those as well. Off location, in a vault, works best for me.

Abstracts are very cool to look at - looking back into the early 1850's when land was granted in my part of the frozen north.  They are quickly becoming a thing of the past as title companies don't really need them to do their job and people losing track of them.

Joan Dickie I too love to look at the history of the dirt. Seems like there is always something interesting in there.

I have a sister who lived in Alaska for 27 years.  I will never forget she and her husband bought silver bullion in the late 1979.  They buried it on a corner of their land.  However, permafrost set in that winter, and they couldn't get to it until summer of 1980.  Alas, Silver crashed in January of that year, and the value was about half by the time my sister was able to get to it!  Here's a story about Silver Thursday.

Hey, Bob!  Who knew about the freezer thing!  I think my bank still has safe deposit boxes.  I'm old fashioned enough to think that's a good thing.

Me too Patricia Kennedy as long as my bank has them I'm going to use it.

Right next to the frozen bat, right? I think we have a leftover bat in our freezer that neither of us want to touch. We kept it in case our cat got rabies, LOL. Actually, I was not aware that banks no longer offered safe deposit boxes. Are we supposed to stuff our mattresses with cash now too?

I've never had the need for a safety deposity box.....not sure what I would freeze either, but not such a bad idea.

The principal reason I have a safety deposit box is for my fathers stamp collection. I'm sure glad I had it there when we went throiugh the flood.

My thinking Hannah Williams is that if your bank doesn't offer safety deposit boxes and you don't have a place off site .... why not? That being said I still haven't stashed any valuables in mine yet except a Tombstone Pizza.
