Cuba may be known for so many many things, but none more than the old cars that are seen everywhere. The people have not had assess to parts in more than sixty years and have used their skills and creativity to keep them going. In actuality, few Cubans can afford to own a car and even more can even find themselves in a position to take a bus. We are very, very lucky here.
Hi Sheila: I was in Cuba for 2 weeks over Christmas. Most of the Cubans take the bus to work (which I thought carted prisoners by mistake, LOL) but if you venture outside the city, they hitchhike fanning pesos at passersby. The brightly colored polished cars are mainly for hire to transport tourists. Where did you stay in Havana?

Did you visit the Nacional? We stayed there for a few days, and it was incredible. Also stayed at the Hotel Capri, which I didn't much care for except for the top floor breakfast.

Sheila, I recently went on a mission trip to Cuba, as they are finally allowing visitors to come there. The primary reason they have nothing but old cars there is when Castro took over back in the late 50's he implemented a trade embargo with the US and we were not allowed to ship cars to Cuba anymore. Therefore, all of the cars you see there are cars built back in the 50's. Just recently has the trade embargo been lifted so we have started shipping cars there again but with th eeconomy being so desolate for so long, now they cannot afford our cars.
