Moving is never easy for young children in school, do you have a plan?
Have you ever been in the position where your job had to transfer you to another city are family needs caused you to relocate your family? Today technology allows for easier moves to keep in touch with friends however studies show that children are affected differently with frequent moves than their parents.
Psychology studies of children show they’re affected by moves caused from divorce, loss of job loss of home. Changing schools, going through puberty and changing cities familiarities can affect young people adversely.
Understanding ways to help Children when Moving:
- Parents can work together to keep anxiety levels to a minimum. Get the kiddos involved with the move by allowing them to map out their new destination, attractions and new schools.

Communication can be hard for children, psychologist recommend playing games with younger children and asking question while they play board games, iPad games. Talk with your children and learn their concerns and fears.

Visiting their new city prior to moving allowing them to participate in local summer camps, churches, and other activities where children of the same age gather.
- Keep in mind children experience moves differently, loss of friends and loss familiar settings can cause poor performance in school, behavioral problems and disconnect with family members. Focus on child's emotions.
Journal of Adolescent Health study found ages 12 through 17 who had moved over the past years had 20% higher odds of visiting emergency room for psychiatric issues. Children between 6 through 11 had about 3% higher odds of having an office visit for mental health reasons.
