I had a settlement this evening in Virginia - the happy conclusion of a five month long short sale negotiation. As you can imagine, it was a wonderful day for the buyer and a bittersweet day for the sellers, but they handled the closing with dignity and grace.
The settlement was moderately interesting since it started at 6:30 on February 29th - I have never had a settlement that started at 6:30 in the evening but that was not what made it really special. It was the parties to the transaction who made it so special.
Mr. Seller was from South America. Mrs. Seller was from South East Asia. They met at college in Virginia. Mr. Seller converted to Mrs. Seller's religion so that they could raise their children with one religion for the whole family. The buyer was from a country in East Africa. The buyer's agent was from Pakistan and frequently works with the title attorney, who was from India. Pakistan and India are two countries with significant political and religious issues, but these two men work together constantly. Sitting at the table we were four Muslims, one Hindu and one Episcopalian.
Not surprisingly, there was no controversy at the table despite this diversity. We were there united in a common goal of a smooth closing. The sellers wanted to be done with a difficult period of their life. The buyer wanted to purchase this new home so that he could bring his bride to America. No doubt the title attorney wanted to be done and go home - and the agents wanted to be paid! This is the face of America and the hope of our country. I was really moved by this evening and proud to be an American - native born or not!
