I’m a judge in the upcoming Web2.0 awards, which Zillow was fortunate enough to win last year. I guess I was asked to be a judge by SEOMoz, the awards organizer, because I’m pretty hip ti what’s happening on the web. So I was floored to see how few of the nominees I had even heard of, no less used. (I don't think I'm allowed to share the names of the nominees until the winners are announced in a few weeks, but trust me: there were dozens of companies that you and I have never heard of.)
There are dozens more web2.0 companies that I have heard of, but don't know anyone who uses. These companies show a lot of sizzle, but little steak.
In that spirit, here is a list of companies that I read about all the time but which I personally don’t use at all:
- Twitter (I have no interest in telling people what I'm doing every moment of the day)
- Facebook (yes, that’s right – I don’t use facebook. My friends have my email address and cell phone number, and that's that.)
- Flickr (call me web1.0, but I still use Ofoto aka KodakEasyShareGallery for my pictures)
- Slide or any of their apps (probably because I don't use facebook)
- Pageflakes (I use myyahoo)
- Google Apps (MSOffice seems to work just fine)
- RockYou or any of their apps
And I'll finish with an example of something with a lot of sizzle but little steak that hits closer to home for us in the RE biz... FSBO or discount real estate brokerages. A lot of ink is spilled talking about discount brokerages, but I personally know no one who has ever used a discount brokerage to sell or buy a home.
Maybe I'm lame, but that's my list. Do you use these services?
