Good Things Are Happening in Prince William County Schools

When you relocate to a new area, you want to make sure the local schools are nothing short of excellent. If you are moving to this area, you should know that Prince William County Schools are some of the highest ranked in the state and country. They provide quality education day in and day out. There have been lots of fun announcements and good news coming from the school system over the past few months. Here are a few updates.

Robots Are Alive in Prince William County Schools

Battlefield High School in Haymarket, ranked one of the best high school in the U.S., will host a March Robotics Competition this weekend. Then on March 11th, students from PWCS, Manassas and Manassas Park will compete at the Regional SeaPerch Competition, trying to qualify for one of 8 spots that lead to the national championship. SeaPerch is an underwater robotics competition. Students will build remotely operated vehicles, or ROVs, that will navigate along the floor of a pool or on the water’s surface. The 8 winning teams will move on to the national challenge in May.

46th Annual Fine Arts Festival Coming Soon

Saturday, April 2nd you can come out to see the work of young artists from across Prince William County Schools at Hylton High School. Over 10,000 two- and three-dimensional works will be on display, from students in grades Kindergarten through 12th. This is a free event that’s open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Local Boy Makes History 

Lewis Ross Brown, a 7-year-old from Prince William County, VA, has become the youngest inductee into the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry. This bright student has dreams of following in his parents’ footsteps to become an environmental toxicologist with a background in water chemistry. He and his father intend to present a research project they are working on together at SETAC’s annual meeting in November. The project deals with heavy metal toxicity exposure in fresh water and estuarine/marine organisms in the food chain.

Prince William County Schools Receive Generous Donations for STEM Education

Manassas-based Micron Foundation has been donating to PWCS since 2010, and their donations now total more than $300,000. The donations are used in support of the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math education program support. These funds are used to support STEM and Career and Technical Education Scholarships, STEM Innovative Grants, Robotics programs, CTE programs and initiatives, STEM support for the Governor’s School and many more worthwhile programs to help educate the next generation of scientists, engineers, mathematicians and more.

Annual Transition Fair Helps Graduating Students With Disabilities Prepare for the Future

Graduating high school is an exciting time, but some students may need help planning what’s next. Students with disabilities and their families can receive some help planning for life after high school. A free Annual Transition Fair will take place on April 2nd from noon to 3:30 p.m. at the Edward L. Kelly Leadership Center. This fair gives students and parents the opportunity to meet with agencies that provide support services to people with disabilities. There will be information sessions about: transition planning, financial aid, college disability support services, estate planning, career planning, guardianship, supported employment and The Department of Rehabilitative Services and Community Services.
