The solution to images not showing up on Facebook, etc.
If you like so many others around here have had problems getting your photos to show up when sharing a blog on FB, then Ryan Huggins - Thousand Oaks, CA has a solution to your problem.
Thanks Ryan!!
I've seen many questions about why images don't show up when you post to Facebook, LinkedIn, etc. I don't share to these networks, but I do copy my AR blogs to my personal website and I was experiencing the same issue. Sadly, it took several weeks of fixing it through a tool before I stumbled upon the answer while doing my market blogs!
The problem is in how Active Rain references the images. Bob Stewart you may want to pass this on to your tech teams.
You all know how to upload an image, but the problem resides in that image upload box. The image below is how ALL images are referenced upon upload. Below in the "Source" field the images is referenced as "/image_store/uploads/agents/ryanhuggins/filename.jpg"
This is perfectly acceptable ON Active Rain as the system will default to the base URL of the website. What does this mean? It means when I copied my Active Rain blog to my website, it was looking for "http://www.HugginsHomes.com/image_store/uploads/agents/ryanhuggins/filename.jpg" which does not exist! Paste to Facebook and it looks for www.Facebook.com/image_store/... and there's the problem!
The Solution:
Before clicking "OK" and inserting the image, add in "http://www.activerain.com/" (without the quotes) before the /image_store/ as shown in the image below:
The technical "mumbo jumbo" this forces the image display code to use the "Fully Qualified Domain Name ("FQDN") instead of a reference to the base URL.
Does it work? It worked on my blogs today and if you can see the image above, you have your proof! That image was inserted with the FQDN. I am confident that this will solve the issue with Facebook too.
What about my existing blogs?
Easy fix! Left click once on the image so the little resizing squares show around it, as shown in the below image:
Now click on the insert/edit picture icon (you see it selected in the image above) and add the http://www.activerain.com to the start of the source, just as in the new image example.
Happy Raining,
Ryan
