Glen Echo on the Potomac, the Washington Rhine
In 1888, two brothers used the slogan above to advertise Glen Echo Maryland. It's a quaint little town upriver from Georgetown in Washington D.C. Glen Echo was famous for the Glen Echo Amusement Park which operated from the late 1800's until the late 1960's.
My grandparents would ride the street car out to Glen Echo Amusement Park
Glen Echo's amusement park is now a National Park. Every weekend, dances are held in the Spanish Ballroom, a restored 1933 Mediterranean Art Deco style building . Washingtonian magazine says the Spanish Ballroom dominates the local swing dance scene. On Saturday nights, there is contra & square dancing. On Friday evenings, there are live bands performing Cajun and Zydeco music. For just 5 dollars a person, dancers get their groove on!
