Moving and settling into a new neighborhood can be an exciting but challenging as well. It can be overwhelming when you feel that you are out of place because you are not familiar with your surroundings. Here are some good tips on how to be able to brake the ice and familiarizing yourself with your new neighbors and neighborhood.
1. Approach neighbors and local business owners
Sometimes making the first move can be beneficial. Approaching a neighbor and introducing yourself can go a long way. Who better then a neighbor who can give you the ins and outs about the neighborhood; networking and getting to know your neighborhood.
2. Make yourself approachable
On a nice day you can sit outside in front of your porch or doing any type of outdoor work or gardening. When you see a neighbor a wave or a simple hello shows that you are receptive to being approached and make small talk. If you are a pet owner and an animal lover, this also can become beneficial with other neighbors who are also pet lovers. With these types of encounters you begin to network and find out where the local supermarket or drug store is. What type of public transportation is available if any.
3. Find out who is your local officials
Neighborhood watches usually are affiliated with their local council. Knowing your local political official is important because their job consist of what their communities need. Getting to know your local fire house and police precinct is also a great way to familiarize yourself with you neighborhood and community.
4. Look into the neighborhood schools
If you are parents of school aged children one of your main concerns would be if their are good schools in the neighborhood. You also want to see how close the school is and get familiar with the school officials such as the school principal. Get involved in the PTA and just being an involved parent.
5. Transportation
If you are a commuter, find out the distance to and from work can definitely assist with getting to work on time. You want to also figure out if you live in a two fair zone in which you will have to take both train and bus.
