Do I Go Back or Forward...An Easy Way to Remember the Time Change
There is an easy way to remember which way to adjust your clocks and other time telling devices during the fall and spring time change. There's a simple saying to help you remember which way to wind the hands (now I'm dating myself).
- Fall back and spring ahead (or forward). That's the saying, and it's that easy...short and to the point. In the spring you set the clocks ahead one hour. In the fall you set them back one hour.
While most of today's devices will automatically do the time change, it's still nice to know which way you are headed. This year the change will happen at 2am on March 13th. This is the official start of daylight saving time (DST). In the fall the time change signifies the start of standard time.
There is a lot of history as to why we change our clocks twice a year. Some of the stories refute others. Some say Ben Franklin started it all, and other sources say he didn't.
In 1966 Congress established a uniformity act for all time zones...except for those states that don't participate in the time change.
It doesn't matter who started it, but it looks like the twice yearly time change will stay with us for a while. I know I'm looking forward to some extra daylight at the end of the work day. How about you?
Now don't forget to spring forward this weekend.
