Why Would You Ever Want to Sell Real Estate as a Career?

When I broke the news to Mom that I was getting a license, her question to me was, “Why would you ever want to sell real estate as a career?” She went on to give me a litany of reasons why I should stay in my chosen profession as a paralegal.  When she finally came up for air and gave me a chance to talk, I looked her squarely in the eyes and said, “Ma, I have to do this for myself and my girls.”

Ma was an Italian woman from the Boston area, and Dad was just a good ole boy from Florida and Georgia and I was convinced he was Will Rogers reincarnated.  Dad loved everyone while Mom was always critical of people.  It was a parallel of extremes, and I knew if she was bothered by my career choice, Dad would probably be overjoyed!  After all, selling real estate gives you the chance to meet people.

There are many reasons for someone wanting to pursue the practice of real estate as a career, not just a side job.  For me, independence was nice, but it was not the priority back then.  I had been used to working for others and being on their time clock, so the freedom of choosing when and when not to work was difficult for me.  I started from the beginning working 8:30 to 5:00 and I veered from that schedule very seldom, usually when other events or appointments precluded my getting into the office on time.

For me, switching to real estate was a natural thing to do.  Lawyers didn’t pay enough, so I worked for a broker.  After 20 minutes of that, I realized I was on the wrong side of the desk, and the rest is history.  By the way, even in my dark times, I never looked back.  Good advice to you younger ones from this old broad!

Why would you ever want to sell real estate as a career?  Every month we hear each student’s dream, and usually freedom is the priority.  Of course money must take precedence when you’re new, but once you become established, if you do the things necessary, the money will find you.  I don’t think it will be easy because nothing worth having comes very easily, except a relationship with God.  So, yes, you may have to work more hours, you may have to sit on more models, you may have to take more floor time, and you may have to make lots of phone calls.  If you keep your eye on the prize, though, it won’t be bad at all.  You’ll be building your own business and that’s pretty much what it’s all about.

Real Estate is a great career but you must be dedicated and hard working. The rewards are definitely worth it.
