What is a Dyngus Day Celebration?
Dyngus Day is commonly called, Easter Monday, the day after Easter and is of European origin. It is the celebration that follows the Lenten fasting. In Polish communities, the celebration continues within some cities in the U.S.. The largest of the celebrations in in Buffalo, NY. Other cities, include Chicago, South Bend and Laporte, IN, Wyandotte and Hamtramck, MI, Hanover, NH and Cleveland, OH.
The second largest celebration, in South Bend kicks off the political season, as the candidates gather to express their views, before the Primary elections. Mainly, the Democratic candidates have been represented in the past, such as Robert Kennedy, when he ran and won his first primary in Indiana. Many of the local and state candidates will also be present. Past attendees includes President Obama and Democratic hopeful and now Presidential candidate, Hilary Clinton. The Primary in Indiana for 2016 will be June 3rd. The various candidates will be competing for, Governor, State Representatives, Congress (Senators / House of Representatives) for Indiana.
The west side of South Bend, a predominately Polish settlement for decades and gathers at such places as the Democratic Club and M.R. Falcons, as well as other well known pubs in the area.
Besides beer, many of the pubs serve such treats as Pierogi's and Dyngus Sausage. Other organizations around the area serve Polish meals, which includes Dyngus Sausage and Cabbage, specially made for the occasion each year. See my blogs on Pierogi's and Dyngus Sausage.
