Consistency vs. Rationality
Back in the late 1960s and early 1970s LIBERTARIANISM was on the
rise.
I got interested because I was "disgusted" with the Republicans for
what they did to BARRY GOLDWATER.
It was through the Libertarian Supper Club which met in Hollywood
that I first became acquainted with the Austrian School of Economic
thought. I was smittened. This was libertarianism with a small "L."
In the early 1970s I got involved with the Libertarian Party.
Libertarianism with a capital "L." what a mistake.
Libertarians wanting to be "consistent," embraced the ideas of the
PEACE AND FREEDOM PARTY. They thought that economic freedom
should be "consistent" with Personal (Social) Freedom.
So here we had the Young Americans For Freedom (read that young, consevative Republicans) teaming up with the "druggies" of the Peace And Freedom Party to create the Libertarian
Party. Talk about strange bedfellows.
Well, they were consistent, but not very rational.
Social Freedom and Economic Freedom are not necessarily
compatible.
It sure wasn't compatible or comfortable for me. I left. As quickly as I
could.
Today we are facing a similar situation. Donald Trump is taking the
Republican Party by storm.
Ted Cruz is saying Donald Trump is NOT a conservative.
Cruz is arguing for consistency while Trump is advocating rationality.
He calls himself a "common sense" conservative. I do too.
Maybe Trump is not a TRUE conservative but he is promising to fix the
problems in Washington that we all agree need fixing.
Plus Trump is bringing millions of voters to the party (and back to the
Party). Millions of voters that we haven't seen since the Reagan
Revolution.
Wouldn't IT be RATIONAL to embrace Trump, his solutions, and all
these voters?
