This week ended a 5 decade span for our McDonalds golden arch! Our sign was one of only two of the original McDonalds signs in the United States! With a single arch and a picture of Speede, it was a reminder of the "good ole days" to many, here in Huntsville, Alabama!
The arch has proudly stood in Huntsville since 1963. The sign managed to hang in there, even after being involved in several traffic accidents! I can only imagine. The single arch, sadly, could not meet the required city building codes.
Speedee and the arch are on their way to be displayed in the American Sign Museum in Cincinnati. They will see to it that Mr. Speedee has the makeover of his life and will be proudly displayed for all to come visit!

Elizabeth, I hate to see things like this sign go away, we're losing too many of these treasures! I am surprized that McDonalds didn't take the sign to it's corporate HQ. I am glad that the sign won't be destroyed!
Elizabeth I DID NOT KNOW THAT!! My sister loves that sign. When she comes down from Nashville we pass that McDonalds to go to my office and she cracks up everytime. This past week I passed by and it was GONE. I sat there in shock for a moment. I had no idea that was one of only two in the United States.
tony-I thought McDonalds would have wanted it also! We have a museum here in Huntsville that takes memorabilia from the area, but the cost to renovate the sign was over $40,000. Yikes!
Kimberly-I feel horrible for your sister. She will be so disappointed! I"m glad that you could learn something from me this time, lol...It is sad that they made them remove it, isn't it?
