Over the past 24 hours, I've been a part of a rather interesting email thread between about a dozen bloggers started by Greg Swann over at the BloodHoundBlog.  It started because content from some blog RSS feeds were being republished on the InmanWiki

Many sites out there that aggregate and republish content from blog RSS feeds in one form or another, the InmanWiki was just one example (technorati, bloglines, squidoo, etc).  Sometimes this resyndication cab viewed as a very valuable source of exposure, other times they can be seen as stealing content.  This creates a huge grey area around the rules of content syndication.  The arguement could even be made by some that, simply by providing and RSS feed on your blog you are tacitly giving permission for your content to be resyndicated (of course I'm sure almost all bloggers will argue this is not the case).

Ultimately, almost every blogger seems to have there own view of the issue.  Is it ok, if you just publish a summary of the article with a link back to the original, the full article with a link back, only the title, etc?  Should the blogger need to opt in, or be able to opt out of the resyndication?  Maybe someday someone will come up with some type of standard around allowing bloggers not only to publish and RSS feed but specify how it can be used.

In the Web 2.0 world where it is becoming increasingly difficult to build an island destination where your content lives and people come to read it.  The name of the game is fash becoming more about pushing content out and "being everywhere" to maximize the number of eyeballs that you get.  It's something all real estate bloggers will have to think about in their marketing strategy, where does the tradeoff lie between maximizing eyeballs, and maximizing control over the destination to maximize your personal benefit.

I'll need to head over to Bloodhound later to check out the discussion.  As far as my blog, I'm less concerned about resyndication, particularly the likes of technorati, inman, etc.  OTOH, Joel at the Future of Real Estate Marketing found out his posts are being usurped by some guy back East.  My condo blog feed (fingers crossed - still no contract) will be resyndicated by one of the local media websites.  But, that'll be done with my approval.

It may depend on circumstances.  In my case, the more distribution the better, provided there are links back to my site.  More readers mean potentially more leads.

I need to check that out too.  I noticed this yesterday that CondoDomain had picked up my feed for their site.  I didn't know about it in advance.  Hopefully the readers will recognize that I am the author and bring some of the business to me...

i'M GETTING notes from real estate agent friends that they see my content on various blogs.  Those blogs appear to be designed for Google AdSense.  So far, it's not a problme.  I've done a few searches for web site content.  That is what I'm concerned about.

Syndication is, no doubt, going to compound our duplicate content problem.

Yeah, I think that Google is taking into account how wide spread content syndication is in their duplicate content algorithms.  Google actually did an official blog post about it at

http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2006/12/deftly-dealing-with-duplicate-content.html

Basically what it says about content syndication is make sure that all the resyndicated content links back to the original.  That lets google know which version to keep in their index.  Google seems to see the bigger problem being lots of duplicate content on a single site, that's where you might run into penalties.

Here's a quote from the post

"Don't worry be happy: Don't fret too much about sites that scrape (misappropriate and republish) your content. Though annoying, it's highly unlikely that such sites can negatively impact your site's presence in Google. If you do spot a case that's particularly frustrating, you are welcome to file a DMCA request to claim ownership of the content and have us deal with the rogue site. "

Re: CondoDomain...they did send me an email asking for permission to syndicate my feed on their website which I ok'd.  Hopefully, it was just an oversight in your case.

I haven't been dinged to hard by the Google duplicate content dilemma.  I think it's important to be one several blogspots at once.  Realtors, however, might not want to affect their google juice.

Lenn I've found my blogs syndicated to sites that are pumping cash for adsense.  They're using our creative property to spam for keywords and I think it's wrong.  The only people that benefit are the spammers and google.  I quit "google content" pay per click right away because of it.  It's an insidious form of pump and dump content.

I am not aware of anyone copying my stuff.  I guess if they did it would be a compliment in some ways.

I definitely think there should be a summary or the first couple lines clipped and then linked back.  It is important that WE also get to know what kind of traffic we're producing.

And... since we're not doing this JUST for the fun - most of us are doing it for referrals and consumers to call us, then we should definitely be able to have them come back to one of our pages with our contact information on it!

Sure, they'll say SEO should allow them to search our names and find us one way or another - but why create that extra step for consumers?

I agree with David... if they are going to do it at all, the most I'd personally allow is the first 2-3 sentences and only if it includes a valid link back to my blog.  Even then, I'd only allow it after they've asked for permission FIRST and I authorized it with the ability to opt out upon notice to them.  Like David wrote, I think it's important to know the traffic that WE are producing, and we are blogging for business, not for someone else to potentially get our business or make money off our work (via AdSense ads, selling image or text links, etc.).

Ben, maybe I got an email from CondoDomain.  I like them and their site.  I am undecided about how I feel about having my posts there.  I have no condo listings at the moment.

Very thought provoking. Hmmmmm. What if a blog were chosen simply for a word in the text that could be directed to a site you may not want your content linked to? Example: you comment "oh Baby" and your blog ends up on a Porno Site. Or you submit a blog that goes off the chart and you find out that the hijackers are all AD sites generating big $$$$$ because of you. Have you been damaged, should you be compensated? HMMMMMMMMM

The issue of duplicate content and penalties is a major one. I read the google link, but that didn't really answer my concerns.

Herb... I'm sure there is a way to make it work that way ... it isn't a real intelligent search but I'm sure someone is doing it...

For instance... before the Bulls won their third Championship in a Row with Michael Jordan, Pat Riley went out and trademarked the word "Three-Peat"... and subsequently made a fortune on the Bulls with what will go down in history as one of the best bets in sports!

I'm sure that trademarkers do just that...

but I'm sure they want to know when someone says, "Let's Get Ready to Rumble" so they can pay Michael Buffer... and they're not searching for CONTENT.
