March 17 is believed to to the day St Patrick passed away. I learned, the expression "Drowning the Shamrock!"-getting loaded came because Shamrock leaves are floated on the whiskey before drinking.
March 17 is Saint Patrick Day. Maewyn Succat is a Roman born in Scotland. He was kidnapped as a teen and taken to Ireland as a Shepard. He escaped but returned and spent 40 years in Ireland and Britain teaching Christianity to the Irish and converted many while building churches and parish in Ireland.
By the time of his death on March 17, circa 461,he had established monasteries, churches, and schools in Ireland. Legends about him drove snakes and he had used shamrocks to explain Trinity. More on it later.
He received little schooling and was mostly self taught. He became a preacher, and enjoyed to preach and write. He was credited to convert many Irish to be Christians. In Ireland shamrock is used in place of a cross. It is not true that St Patrick used shamrock to explain Trinity. Snakes are not often found in Ireland. It is believed Christianity did not even exist in Ireland before.
As the Irish immigrants fled during the 19 century famine, they came to America and started celebrations on March 17 to commemorate their heritage and religion. Chicago has been celebrating since 1962. Mayor Richard Daley ordered to dye Chicago River in downtown green because he is the city boss.
Irish and non-Irish alike commonly participate in the “wearing of the green”—sporting an item of green clothing or a shamrock leaves, the Irish national plant, in the lapel. Corned beef and cabbage often come with the celebration.
In San Francisco the 165th annual St. Patrick's Day parade and festival took place. Chinese-American mayor Ed Lee who will not skip any holiday celebration being Irish or not so long as it promotes tourism. Did you know Ireland did not have any celebration until 1995 in Dublin?

"Sona la St Patrick" has the same meaning as Mayor Lee's "Gung Hee St Patrick Dias".
