Humidify or Dehumidify, That Is The Question.

With the change of seasons it's important to keep tabs on the humidity inside your home, especially if you are in a home that once flooded.

The last thing you want to do is to promote mold in your home.

Interior living in the North land is unbearable without a humidifier. Shortly after that furnace kicks in the humidity in most Northern homes would drop to about 20% if you did nothing to raise it. At 20% you will have a great deal of static electricity, dry skin problems, and even shrinkage of certain building materials that may lead to cracks in drywall and other materials.

However if you don't turn off that humidifier in a timely fashion you will be promoting mold through out your house and that would be an even more serious health hazard.

I honestly have not been able to get a straight answer for any "expert" on what the ideal indoor humidity level is. If the humidity in my home is over 40% I turn off the humidifier. If the humidity level in my home is 50% or higher I turn on the dehumidifier. That's the rule of thumb that works best for me.

Yes, smart approach.  This can certainly help reduce hardwood expansion/contraction throughout the seasons.

Thanks Debbie Women of Westchester Working Together I would imagine the more constant you keep it the better. Is there a recommended humidity level for hardwood flooring?

If you talk to window experts most will tell you the ideal is 30%.  With that yoi don't get condensation on your windows.

But everyone is different.   I have an outdoor wood boiler.  We do not run a humidifier and out humidity runs about 50% the entire winter...some times I even run the de-humidfyer to bring it down some.

Bob "RealMan" Timm

Thanks for the info William Feela I can relate to the 30% as that seems to be OK for my health. Before I got all new windows I did have condensation problems but I have not since.

You certainly don't want to increase the chances of mold. I imagine there are many who use humidifiers in the winter but don't think about this possibility!

Very true Jeff Dowler CRS I also failed to mention that many people have automatic humidifers here that work through the furnace itself BUT my favorite heating man says they really shorten the life of the furnace.

Bob -when we lived in Northern VA, I had a humidifier on at night when we had the heater on. I also had one in the corner where my orchids were.  You do have to make sure the humidifier is kept clean.

When I lived in Minneapolis, we used a humidifier in the winter and a dehumidifier in the summer, especially in the basement. Now that I'm in California, we just roll with the days.

Hi Bob - I know that is important with forced air heat.  The only place I have a dehumidifier is in my basement.  I usually let the AC handle that in the summer.

Mar 19, 2016 01:44 PM
Bob "RealMan" Timm

That's very true Grant Schneider as AC does a good job of dehumidifying. That is also a good reminder to make sure that discharge hose is emptying into the drain.

Good morning Bob "RealMan" Timm . It depends upon what part of the country that you are in. If you have humidifiers, they need to be cleaned periodically.

Good point Michael TeamCHI - Complete Home Inspections, Inc. as they can harbor nasty things. I think they recommend changing the wicks monthly but I'm guilty of only doing it twice a season.
