How many times have you been out with friends who are grandparents and the conversation revolves around their grandchildren?
Yes being a grandparent is a wonderful time for most people and yet we are not totally aware of its impact on our lives and for that matter our life style.
Becoming a grandparent can affect where we live. More and more grandparents are taking care of their grandchildren out of necessity.
Many young families cannot afford the cost of daycare for their children and rely on their parents to babysit during the day while both parents work.
For others living close by to their grandchildren is something they choose to do.
If your children live near you then moving may not be something that is required. You can have the luxury of visiting your grandchildren by picking them up or by having them dropped off for the day.
But for those who have children that live out of state then it becomes more difficult to spend time with their grandchildren..
Now That Your Grandparents I Bet...
you did not think you had to make a decision about where you should live.
If you are a grandparent and are consisidering a move based on your grandchildren then I think you should:
- postpone a move to a retirement community because many have rules and regulations that limit grandchildren from sleeping over night or restrict visiting.
- make sure your home can be baby proofed from children getting into drawers, medicines, etc.
- make sure your home has enough bedrooms, bathrooms, and storage for grandchildrens toys.
- make sure you have a nice backyard that is fenced in and secure.
- make sure there are parks nearby.
- make sure all balconies, staircases, are protected to prevent falls and block areas like ledges where children can get stuck.
- if you want to move consider a ranch home vs a home with steps.
