The Mighty Mississippi and the Sacramento River

By
Real Estate Agent with Elizabeth Anne Weintraub, Broker DRE #00697006

When I was a kid growing up in Minneapolis, we spent a lot of our time outdoors at Minnehaha Falls and playing along the Mississippi River. Unlike some people, I find Mississippi easy to spell. In fact, we learned how to spell Mississippi in grade school as a jingle: mis - sis - si - ppi. I still can't spell Connecticut or Cincinnati because there are no jingles, but fortunately I don't have to spell either of those words very often. Many cities, though, were formed along river banks. It's where our Native Americans settled, to be near a water source.

Now that I live close to the Sacramento River in Land Park, Sacramento, I find myself intimately familiar with wild skunks. We don't do much with the river except go bike riding along the levee or glance at the water as we drive over Business 80. I've never been on the Sacramento River in a boat, although I have gone boating down the Mississippi.

I've been thinking about this as I studied a photo I shot for my blog last week of the Sacramento River and compared it to a photograph my sister forwarded yesterday of the Mighty Mississippi River with my brother on its banks. You can read more about that and how my brother is faring in my personal blog today at this link: My Brother John in Minnesota.

To this day, I can spell it because of the jingle and I still like it too. More of this way of teaching and the world at large would sing literally. Thank u for sharing

Hi Elizabeth- Larry grew up in Clinton Iowa, also on the Mississippi and I love going there to visit and drive along it. Yes, I find it easier to spell Mississippi than some other words because of that jingle.

Hello Elizabeth -- that jingle certainly makes spelling Mississippi(in fact I was singing in my head as I wrote the word) a lot easier.  And that's fer shure.   Ya betcha.

The picture you share is interesting especially in light of snow still on the ground in many parts of the country today there isn't any in Minneapolis.   Wishing your brother much peace and a lot less pain.

Reading about your brother John I get that familiar feeling of dread in my gut.  I lost my father to lung cancer and it was so hard to watch him waste away.  Since John made it long enough to see Bruce in concert, I bet he can hang on long enough to take a cruise on the Mississippi and enjoy that sunshine some more.  Will keep him in my prayers..you and your sister too.

Chris Ann Cleland He's been dealing with this for 3 years, and it was only a year ago in February that the doctors actually pinpointed his diagnosis and began treatment. Usually those with this type of Sarcoma don't live longer than a year, so he's already past that, and every day is precious. I'm relieved that he decided to break the barrier of silence after all these decades. Thank you for your kind thoughts.
