Rancho Cordova's Chain Link Fence Buy Back Program

By
Real Estate Agent

This morning I woke to the sound of a small crowd of teenagers gathered in front of my neighbor’s home.   The mini-bus they had arrived in heralded the logo of a local church, so I began to understand the neighbor, an elderly widow, wasn’t going to be in much danger.

Soon after, tools including wire cutters, sledge hammers, shovels, were carried from the bus. This group had arrived to take on the task of removing the chain link fencing that surrounded the front yard.

Recently, the City of Rancho Cordova enacted a Chain Link Fence Buy Back Program, initiated to aid in the beautification of residential neighborhoods within the city.  The city compensates $1,000 to the homeowner, for participating in the program.  The money can be used to pay for their removal.  This group of young people, plus a pair of adult supervisors, had that fence removed within an hour or so.

I was immediately impressed with how much more open and delightful my neighbor’s home and yard appear now.  It’s sure to add a measure of value to her home!

Myrl what a great program!  I've never heard of a chain link buy back program.  I'm impressed with the kids and the adults helpers to give their time and energy to help out community members.  Makes my heart sing!

Anna Banana Kruchten - I am beginning to absolutely love this program!  I was shocked at how much beauty was added to my neighbor's home by the removal of that fence.  I hadn't even considered it before!

Sandy Padula and Norm Padula, JD, GRI - I bet a number of cities and communities could enhance their neighborhoods with this kind of program.

Hi Myrl - That program is a wonderful idea for improving neighborhoods and getting rid of those eyesore chain link fences - I wish we had one here.

Mryl, Now that is a worthy community program. Gone are the days of front fencing for kids and pets to play.  We had one when I was a child growing up many long years ago - back when kids could play ... and did play outside and parents did not worry about them.

Robert 'VEGAS BOB' Swetz - The whole experience of watching that team of young people working on that project, did my heart good!

Dick Greenberg - Perhaps folks could encourage their cities and communities to create similar programs.  When you stop to think about it, it shouldn't be that difficult to do.

Kathleen Daniels - I think one of the saddest things I see with my grandkids, is that it isn't safe for them to live as freely as we did as kids. There is an elementary school around the corner from my home.  Kids use to walk there by themselves.  But, in today's world, they are driven or accompanied there by parents.  When was it that troublemakers got all the rights, at our children's expense???

We don't have many chain link fences in our area - and I can't stand them when they cut off the front of the home.  Great program!!

Hi Myrl Jeffcoat - I love this idea!  This works on so many levels! Besides all the great community benefits, it revitalizes the look of the home.  I am working on a blog for a landscaper on updating tired properties and giving them a youthful new look. What a great blog for Spring!  Thanks for sharing it.

I have never thought of these as an eyesore, my tenants love homes with these as they keep their pups away from the street.

Hi Myrl -- this is a program I can surely support.   Chain link fences certainly do not enhance the look of neighborhoods and I'm always happen when I see one removed.   Not enough...yet...but soon hopefully all neighborhoods will be chain link fence-free!
