Antoine-Germain
Thanks for stopping by and taking time out of your day to read my post. My intent is to put a smile on your face. Hopefully you’ll go away with some information you may have forgotten about or did not know. Now sit back and enjoy.
Antoine was born in Oloron-Sainte-Marie back in 1777 to Francois and Christine. I have no record of his childhood but what I can tell you of course is the rest of the story. He spent over 2 years as a pupil of a pharmacist before being drafted into the army. He was promoted to battlefield sergeant. While in the army he became a pharmacist-in-chief of a military hospital. He was discharged from the military in 1795 after recovering from a bout with typhus.
Might as well tell you know I’m writing about Antoine-Germain Labarraque. After his discharge he went to Paris where he worked as a pharmacist and studied at the College of Pharmacy. In 1805 he qualified as a master of Pharmacy. Back then it was necessary to process animal intestines to make musical instrument strings. Of course this had it downfalls because of all the odors, and diseases while processing. Well what he did of course is the rest of the story. He formulated a solution of sodium and calcium hypochlorite which is now known as sodium hypochlorite and is still used today as a disinfect and deodorizer. In fact, his findings and discoveries started a full 40 years before Pasteur and Lister began to establish the theoretical basis for disinfectants being used in hospitals and surgeons for keeping their work environment clean.
