California Poppy Reserve in the Antelope Valley in CA...
A few years ago Diane and I went to the Antelope Valley to see the California Poppy Reserve. The site was virtually indescribable. The Fields were covered with Yellow and Orange as if it was a Carpet that has been rolled out before we arrived.
People had pulled their cars on the shoulder and frantically taking pictures. Diane and I were just amazed; we have never seen anything like it. Truly a feast for the eyes. Ever since then every year we were discussing going and couple years later we went and it was a total bust. Virtually no Poppies to see.
Then we started tracking it on the Internet, since the Poppy Reserve publishes a blog as to the status of the Poppies and it has been lackluster at best, so we did not go. This year I have had the craving and a couple weeks ago we talked and agreed today will be the day we go. Now with that said, last night we went to the websiteCalifornia Parks Website and much to my chagrin the news was not good.
The Bloom Status: March 25, 2016
The season appears to be ending early, as the rains a couple weeks ago came too late to sustain the bloom that had barely gotten started. The fields are mostly grasses now and there will likely be few wildflowers left by our usual mid-April peak.
So much to my disappointment we decided to do something we have not done in a while and drove to Laguna Beach. The three of us: Diane, Satchmo aka Schmoie and the designated driver (me).
So much to my pleasant surprise as we were strolling in Laguna Beach look what we discovered in the parking lot of a Gas StationJ) Yes you guessed it California Poppies. So we got the best of both worlds. We got to see a small microcosm of the California Poppies and we spent the late morning early afternoon in Laguna Beach, CA.
