The Lumber Liquidator (LL) has vowed not to order low end laminated flooring from selective Chinese sources and claimed they now get floor materials from Europe or other regions last year.
The new revision test shows it is more dangerous than as suggested. The calculation assumed a wrong room height in establish room volume so the independent lab suggests. The initial report puts the risk of cancer at 2 to 9 cases per 100K. Now it is 6 to 30 cases. Center for Disease Control (CDC) Report added. If a strong chemical odor or ill symptom like eye, nose and throat irritation, do not take any chance.
Lumber Liquidator agreed to pay $2.5 million to resolve a charge by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) about the level of formaldehyde in its laminate flooring products sourced from China.
When the retailer agreed to pay a charge quickly, the likelihood that Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) may decide not to demand retailer that LL to recall all sold materials according a someone familiar to the health threat.
Formaldehyde can be found in a number of house hold items. It is used in furniture, permanent press clothing and floor coverings. Some people who purchase new carpeting, cars they love to inhale possibly detergent and binders. I always roll the car windows and homes to air out the "fume". It is also found in wood burning stoves. I avoid eat BBQ products if possible as they seem to link to cancer when consumed in quantity frequently.
For flooring I avoid the hardwood that comes with laminated particle board. Whatever binder they apply I feel uncomfortable with it. I prefer solid wood or tiles. Tiles are what many people prefere. Look for label Carb Phase 2 Compliant when purchase wooden flooring.
If in doubt one can order a sampling test from Air Sampling-Southern CA lab or someone specialize in mold, Benzene, PCB, and formaldehyde testing. For do it yourself there are a number of instruments one can carry to show off your knowledge and ways to detect toxic gases. Here is one for $199.00 mail order.
