Before I moved my family to Greenville, SC from Southern CA, we were attempting to do a little house hunting with a Realtor to decide if we might buy in and stay in Southern CA. I was not yet a Realtor at the time.
This particular Realtor had a flashy, almost cartoonish image. He had very flashy cowboy boots and a bushy, thick Tom Selleck style mustache with waxed, looping handlebar ends on the mustache. I couldn't decide if he was for real, or if he was just trying hard to have people remember him. Well, we remembered him alright...for all the wrong reasons!
At one point our cowboy Realtor thought it was smart to warn us about a specific neighborhood. He told us that "the Mexican immigrants are moving in, painting their homes any damned color they want and parking their pick-up trucks on the front lawns". First of all, I had already been through that neighborhood and it was nothing like his description.
Second of all, and more importantly, I was sickened by his comments and attitude. My wife's parents are first generation Mexican-American immigrants. My wife was born in Southern CA and proudly refers to herself as being Mexican-American. Our children are half Mexican-American.
This Realtor ticked me off, disgusted me and made himself look like a real moron and a jerk! I think he was waiting for me to laugh with him and engage in a few racial slurs.
I quickly turned and walked away from him, told him we were done shopping for homes and we drove off knowing that we would never call that guy again!
I've heard of a few "lapses of judgment" with Realtors. However, this guy was over-the-top with his stupid and racist comments!
Any Realtor who thinks this type of behavior and comments are acceptable are just ticking time bombs! Any Realtor who engages in this behavior is on their way out of this business! It's not a question of if they're going to self-implode, but when!
Be a professional. Be a class act. Be a human being. Be a Realtor!
