Whether he wins or loses, Donald Trump might have changed American politics forever. He clearly is a genius at personal/business branding.
He's got Trump International Realty, Trump Classic Cars LLC, Trump Commercial Chicago LLC, Trump Cozumel Corp, Trump Marks Waikiki Corp, Trump On the Ocean LLC, Trump Toronto Development Inc, Trump Tower Commercial LLC, Trump Vineyard Estates LLC, and hundreds of others Trump businesses!
Politics is rough. From my perspective, this year seems especially tough on the candidates. So what does a powerful multi-billionaire like Donald need to learn about social media?
1. Sometimes it's better to take the high road.
A perfect example of this is the situation with a super PAC supporting Ted Cruz that used a picture of Trump's wife, Melania. The Donald got mad and retaliated on Twitter. It would have been better for Donald to praise his wife, and then move on to other topics.
2. Pause and think, for at least 24 hours.
Sometimes harsh things get said in the heat of the moment that, upon reflection, we wish we could take back those words. With the internet we have the temptation to respond immediately. It's better to write a response, and then sleep on it. Re-reading a heated response, in the cool calm of the following day, can help prevent unwise comments from ever being posted.
3. There are times when NO response is the best response.
I realize it's not easy! However, it proves self-control. This is the same strategy to use when dealing with internet trolls. When you just ignore them, you take away the power of the troll to stir things up. If you can summon the determination to walk away, and not respond, it makes you look like the better person.
