USPS stamp prices set to go down 2 cents in April 2016

By
Real Estate Agent with Compass CA DRE# 01215160

mailing project ready to goFor the first time in almost 97 years (no wonder I can't remember a decrease ever happening before) some postal rates are set to go down on April 10, 2016.

  • First class stamp, currently 49 cents will be 47 cents
  • First class metered 1 oz letter, currently 48.5 cents, reduced to 46.5 cents
  • Postcard, currently 35 cents, will be 34 cents
  • Letters, additional ounces, currently 22 cents/ounce, reduced to 21 cents/ounce

Fearing this was an April's Fool joke, I checked it out.

Who knows how long this reduction will last, so take advantage and get your mailings done now.

Thanks for checking this out....I too thought it was a joke.  Ummm I just bought 500 stamps for my daughters wedding before this reduction!

Kathleen Daniels - I generally use Staples as my post office -- they have a contract with USPS, has long hours and short lines.  I'm keeping most of my "forever stamps" 'cause my hunch is this decrease won't last long.

Melanie Ross - nice to see you here, Melanie! And a wedding -- how exciting for you. See my note to Kathleen, above.

Hi Chris Ann Cleland - I suspect the reduced rate won't stay in place long -- I'm hanging onto my rolls of Forever stamps, at least for now.

Hi Brian England - I've seen nothing in the papers; haven't heard a peep on the radio. Good thing I have some great title company reps here. This is the first decrease in almost 97 years! (My hunch is that it will be short-lived.)

I know, Evelyn Johnston - I told my husband I couldn't remember a drop in postage rates ever -- then I read it's the first time in almost 97 years that they've dropped. That would explain it.

Good morning Lottie. You had good reason to be skeptical, we may never see anything like that happen again.

How many of us bought rolls and rolls of Forever stamps as a hedge against rate hikes, Joe Petrowsky ?

I will be buying lots and lots of forever stamps because I feel a permanent rate hike is just around the corner.

Good morning again Lottie. It is hard to believe but true. Seems to me the money could be used for other things.

Sheila Anderson and Grant Schneider - apparently a couple of years ago when the prices were increased, they were increased for only a short duration. Time's up!

Now would be the time to stock up, Rebecca Gaujot, the Go To Realtor® - I suspect they might go up again in the near future?

It didn't seem to make sense, Laura Allen, Lake Tahoe - Truckee Real Estate for Sale www.TahoeLauraLuxuryHomes.com - so I checked it out. It's true--prices decreased last Sunday, 4/10/16. For how long is the big question.

It's amazing how quiet the press has been about this price roll-back, Sharon Tara . One of our title reps brought it to our attention, or I would have missed it for sure.
