Do You Want To Buy A House For your Future Ex?

This was an actual conversation with a potential buyer. It was an Internet call on a property that was not mine.

As a listing agent, I don't work with buyers who are looking to buy homes  not listed by me. This buyer wanted a home in the county, he knew his price range, wanted good schools for his children and a nice garage.

I directed him to my website.

One of my properties, caught his eye, BUT

it was Too Late, it is just  under contract.

Future Ex

I found out his wife wasn't really  that interested. She really didn't want to get married. His wife  did not really want kids ( they have two). And his wife had been unfaithful.

But he loved her.

So I asked

Why do you want to buy a house for your future EX wife?

Why do you want to buy a house that you are not going to live in?

That's so sad for the children but at least he seems to have a good perspective on things.

Lise Howe He said he felt I was talking to him like his mother who passed away a few years ago. He was going to do some serious thinking.

Wow, it is a weird position we're in sometimes, as third party observers with a 1,000 foot view of the couples. I had a couple break up in my car once, and I had to drive them back to their car, 30 minutes from where we were. I listened to the radio and stared awkwardly forward.

Oh my gosh Margaret!!!!  That's a lot of "turns out" information to get from a would be buyer ... shaking my head in San Jose.

Kathleen Daniels Continue shaking your head. When you hear a potential buyer say they are having problems with their marriage...I'm not sure this is the right time to move forward  with a home purchase.

Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland You gave him good advice.  It sounds like he has a lot of thinking to do.  Hopefully, he will take your advice and do the right thing for himself and his children.

It was probably not my place, as an agent, to talk him out of buying a house. But I do think it was what he needed to hear.
