Stop Acting Like Blogging Is Rocket Science

Rocket Science(Bear with me.)

The avant-garde trend of Blogging Evangelism in real estate blogs has ironically turned quite blase in their ubiquity.  What?
Let me try that again.

It seems that the giving of advice, and the posture of expert, has become so fashionable that it’s impact is lost.  What?
Let me try that again.

Everyone thinks they need to share their expertise, no one is being heard.  Oh.

Teresa Boardman, our resident real estate blogging goddess asks us 21 questions, less as an effort to gain answers, than to point out how irrelevant the concern is.  It seems lately everyone wants to learn from Teresa’s success by assuming they already know where it is coming from.  Fancy talking interviewers are clouding the true point and focus of Teresa’s efforts in their own need to explain it all away.  It’s not about being an expert; blogging is not rocket science, it’s about being yourself, and putting what you have into it.

Oh Mr. Tomato, Round and Red, clear up my confusion so I can turn off my computer and go to bed.

Maybe you or your readers can help me with this blog stuff.  Recently I have been interviewed by newspapers, a couple of magazines, some pod casters, and some “big” blogs.  They ask me questions about my blog.  Some of the interviewers have never read my blog and don’t really understand what a blog is.  I answer their questions and send them to the Tomato for information and advice.  Why do they want to know what a blog is anyway?

You had me rolling!!! Like a .... (better go read the whole post and the comments to see what I am rolling like ...) This was a brilliant look into the obscure simplicity of blogging. Thank you!

You always give me such great things to think about Jim, Mr. Tomato Man!  It may not be rocket science but it sure feels difficult at times.

Jim,

I have to say that I'm with Ines on this one.  Sometimes I just feel that I have nothing to give.  However, when I get into my "grove" I just.... well GROVE!

I think I have the "write from the heart" part.  What gets me is things like, sidebar widgets, back links and why wont that darn Meebo work.  Now, that feels like rocket science.

Nice to see you...

I'm alive :)

I love it!  If you disect something to far it looses it's form/magic/voice!

I know for myself that the best way to march to my own drummer sometimes is to figuratively....take my hands and cover my ears, close my eyes hard, and say; Nanh, Nanh, Nanh until the doubts and questions go away!  :  )

Jim - I'm still not exactly sure exactly how blogging helps grow my business but I keep at it - I try to learn something every day.  Even if I'm not exactly sure the how and why of real estate blogging it is still working.  My blog comes up on all the major search engines.  I keep trying to seed my blog with terms that seem appropriate - but I think the main reason I'm doing it is that's is fun. I like getting the comments and emails from bloggers all over the county and that keeps me doing it.  If it helps my business grow that's the cherry on top.

Thanks for the encouragment.  I'm with Sara.  I love to write and want to write, but don't want to be a bore

1.to weary by dullness, tedious repetition, unwelcome attentions, etc
I can't think of anything worse, maybe the neighbors dog doing his business in my brand new flower bed, but that's about it.  I'm going to take Deborah's que and do the nah, nah, nah thing.

Jim, I'm very new at this and understand what a blog can do for my business.  However, I'm still at a loss as to how to best achieve that.  Some of the more technical aspects of blogging (as Sara mentions) are what stump me.  I'd heard of you before but hadn't taken the time to look.  Your site looks phenomenal and I will definitely be visiting while I try to get this blogging thing just right.  Thank you.

Hey Jim, Good advice, I think...yes ... that is what it did, made me think, good post.  Thank you!

Defining a good blog is like defining a good book - everyone's definition is different. Every blog reader is going to judge from their own perspective which blogs and which bloggers are good ones.

I was just told I cannot leave smilies on posts. I don't do it much but when you read a blog and don't know what to write you should leave something no? Sometimes the blog is a waste of the time I took to read it and I might leave a sad face. Nobody tells you there's seeds in tomatoes.

Excellent post!  Very tongue-in-cheek.  I love it.

Anything new and unusal poses a threat and that's the reason we all hate to get out our comfort zone.  Give it a try and you'd be surprised how easily it takes shape.  Try it....you might like it.

No, I think it's more like "computer science."

I wonder if we will still be able to use rocket scientists as the epitome of intelligence after that whole thing with the psycho astronaut?  When the news first broke, I thought, "Boy, she's no rocket scientist..."

Then I realized:  Oh my God!  She is a rocket scientist!  I bet she'd make a great blogger.

R & I-

The science comes in the formula you establish to maximize the syndication of your blog.  Syndication: exposure and broadcast.  The "if you write it they will come" approach kind of works... especially in the long run, but for a running start, out of the gates... there can be some rocket science to it...

Sara,

Don't know if you ever read the article: Tiger Woods Would Beat Me With A Broomstick... but the idea is that it is not the bling that makes a business blog work, it's the voice and content.  Stick with your heart, leave the toys for the kids.  Who wants to chat it up on our personal sites anyhow?

Maureen H,

Fun is a reason to keep it up... if it weren't, why do it?   Keep in mind though, it is still an extension of your business and should be treated that way.  Business blogging is not for ego, skill, hobby or camaraderie... those all may be by-products of the effort, and reasons to keep the pace, but I feel that the bottom line is that the focus needs to be on the business end of it for it to 'work'.

Luke,

You wrote:  "but when you read a blog and don't know what to write you should leave something no?"
Definitely not.  The comments etiquette should be that a comment is something that adds to the article's content.  I don't know that smiley faces or just saying something to do so is the best approach.  One of the challenges with the point system is that people are sometimes rewarded for saying 'nothing'.  My advice, if you have nothing to say, don't say anything.

People blog for different reasons and you are right it's not rocket science. As David Fuller puts it "just do it".

HOW DID I MISS THIS!

Blogging ain't rocket science... but finding a way to keep up with all the great posts is.
